Judene Hinds and her 71-year-old mother Jennifer Hinds, whose plight was highlighted in The Nation last month, will soon be moving into a new home. They are living in deplorable conditions at Woodbourne, St Philip, and so bad was the situation that the Child Care Board refused to send home a newborn baby, which was delivered to Judene’s 20-year-old daughter, into the unsanitary conditions. Judene is also the caretaker of a four-year-old and an 11-year-old. Community activist Joy-ann Haigh reached out to the family after reading about their situation. The Welfare Department will be paying for the new home being rented to the family by a kindhearted St Philip couple who read of their predicament. Haigh said she had sourced some baby items for the newborn but appealed to Barbadians to assist the family with furniture and appliances since they basically had nothing, or what they had was not in suitable condition. He was eulogised as a “quiet and compassionate” person who would often offer good advice particularly to young men.
