Embracing the picturesque backdrop of the lush landscapes and open seas of the Faroe Islands, the design for Smyril Line's new headquarters and ferry terminal in the Faroese capital pays homage to traditional Faroese fishing boats and the historic Eastern harbor. @element_visualizations was the team that translated our design to imagery, crafting Smyril's visual story. Their visuals have won @architizer's Vision Award for Best Photorealistic Visualisation of the Year 2023. Congratulations on the well deserved achievement! Once the primary gateway connecting the Faroe Islands with the rest of the world, Tórshavn's Eastern harbor holds sentimental value for many Faroese people, serving as a departure point for loved ones embarking on new journeys or as a romantic setting for leisurely strolls along the water. In recent years, the harbor was closed to the public due to Schengen port security measures. The new terminal, logistics centre, and office building, totaling 8,000 m2, captures the essence of the nostalgia found in 1950’s black-and-white photographs showing crowds gathering to bid farewell to departing passengers. #henninglarsen #henninglarsenarchitects #architecture #scandinaviandesign #nordicnoir #designboom #archdaily #architecture_hunter #architecturerender #landscapearchitecture #landscapedesign #greenroof #faroeislands #torshavn

At present, construction waste accounts for half of the world’s solid waste, 90% of which comes from demolition. By 2025 this is predicted to reach 1.1 billion tonnes annually. Design for disassembly means accepting accountability for these alarming numbers and designing proactively and practically to change them. It means ensuring that building components can be reused and have a healthy second life. Embraced as a key driver, design for disassembly was central to our design of this small pavilion, housing a restaurant and bar, in Hagastaden, a new city district nestled in between the Swedish capital Stockholm and its suburb, Solna. With a burnt wood exterior and glulam frames, the timber construction is designed as a double frame structure, with changing angles and heights, dropping from 10 to 4 meters from one end of the building to the other. "This is truly an extremely inspirational project. It could reset how larger tracts of land can be comprehensively designed around resiliency and climate change," That's what the jury had to say about Downsview at the Toronto Urban Design Awards. We are so proud to be recognised with an award of excellence for the new neighbourhood. Together with the incredible team, we have designed the Downsview Framework Plan to reimagine the transformation of 520 acres of the former Downsview Airport and surrounding land in North Toronto into a complete, connected community. The project is set to be the largest urban development in Canada. Developed through an extensive engagement process with the local community and the knowledge of our aforementioned partners, the framework harnesses Danish city-building principles to create a nature-oriented district that will promote a green-minded, human-scale and people-first community. Congratulations to everyone on the team: @id8downsview, @kpmbarch, @sla_architects, @urbstrat, @rambollgroup, @transsolar_ny, @transsolar_klimaengineering, Swerhun, and Department of Words and Deeds. Don't be fooled by the size of Feldballe School. Built almost entirely of bio-based materials, the 250 m²/2,700 ft² school extension is our most ambitious project to date. With the support of the Danish philanthropic organization Realdania, our team set out to explore ways of designing a building that could capture more carbon than it emits. This means harnessing the natural carbon cycle to design a carbon-storing building; embedded with carbon that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. In doing so, we chose to radically rethink our choice of materials; the literal building blocks with which we work. This is something we are doing in many of our ongoing projects, including our urban development of Fælledby in Copenhagen, the forward-thinking World of Volvo experience center in Gothenburg, and the Quayside development of Toronto. But with Feldballe marking an exciting testing ground and an opportunity to push the matter several steps further, we turned to a seemingly unlikely choice of materials: wood, seagrass, and straw. Locally sourced, natural, and bio-based, they have proven themselves viable alternatives to conventional materials like concrete, bricks, and steel. In selecting materials that naturally absorb and store CO2 in the carbon cycle, not only did we generate immense carbon savings, but we successfully designed a structure that is composed of carbon sequestering elements. Special thanks to @realdaniadk and @eco.cocon for the support and partnership on this project. For more info on Feldballe School, look for the link in our bio. While the well-being of urban residents stands as a pivotal component of a socially sustainable city, studies reveal a concerning trend: the mental health of girls and young women living in cities is deteriorating. Urban Mind is a research project at Henning Larsen addressing a chronically neglected area of urban planning; how urban design impacts the health and wellbeing of teenage girls. There is a pressing need for the industry to better accommodate the diverse needs of its users, providing spaces where everyone can thrive. The research project has set out to address these issues, envisioning a future that prioritizes the well-being and empowerment of young women. The research project seeks to challenge and diversify the narratives about teenage girls. Rather than generalizing their needs, attention was turned to their rich and nuanced lived experiences. As a result, the team has created two open-source guides containing principles for design as well as methodology surrounding participation processes for designing urban spaces with the well-being of teenage girls in mind. A special thank you to our partners The National Institute of Public Health (Denmark), @sdusonderborg, and our supporters the Ramboll Foundation. Fifty-seven years after Uppsala Town Hall first opened, it finally fulfilled its original intention. In collaboration with SLA and Tyréns, we've designed an extensive transformation of the town hall, totaling 25,000 m2, including 13,500 m2 new built. The project was a renovation and an extension to the existing architecture from 1964, and is a great example on how preserving and reusing the structure and elements of the existing building has significant 'carbon savings'. This is not only a great way of using the valuable recourses in existing buildings but can also combine the past, present and future into the new architectural design. The transformed town hall, now in use, is the new public gathering place in Uppsala. Jurong Lake Gardens, a cherished landmark with roots dating back to the 1970s, underwent a large restoration in 2019, rejuvenating both the Singaporean community and its local wildlife. The park embraces a nature-based approach to combat the impacts of climate change and has brought back the freshwater swamp forest that once stood on the site, creating a sanctuary filled with inclusive outdoor spaces and indigenous flora and fauna. @urbanlandinstitute’s new report, "Parks That Protect", highlights "leading-edge waterfront park projects that are designed to protect their neighborhoods from climate threats while improving residents’ health and quality of life." Designed by the landscape team in Singapore, Jurong Lake Gardens is one of seven case studies in the report: "Exemplifying Singapore’s vision to become a “city in nature” and inspired by the ideas of thousands of the city-state’s citizens, the lakeside park restores the site’s original freshwater swamp forest as a powerful tool to enhance climate resilience and biodiversity, reconnecting people to the island’s rich flora and fauna, and provide more nature-based recreational opportunities," states @urbanlandinstituteget. As we stand at the crossroads of urbanization and ecological preservation, it's time to reimagine how we weave nature into the very fabric of our cities. "The future success of our cities requires a shift to a more ecological mindset which recognizes the deep interdependencies of humans and nature," says Associate Principal, Gregory Haley in his essay, 'City Nature and the Nature of Cities', drawing attention to various case studies. Downsview in Toronto will breathe life into forgotten spaces, weaving together green corridors and vibrant neighborhoods. Meanwhile, Fælledby in Copenhagen is fusing urban living with untamed wilderness, creating a completely new neighbourhood where every door is just steps away from local and biodiverse nature. Haley implies that urban innovation has potential to blur the lines between architecture and ecology. The green facade system in Copenhagen's Nordø district exemplifies this fusion, a testament to our ability to embrace nature's dynamism within our built environments, "Just as ecosystems nest across scale, so must us our design thinking." Whilst quantifying the carbon footprint of buildings has undoubtedly come into greater focus in recent years, it’s time we acknowledge that buildings cannot be examined in isolation. As of now, the immense impact of embodied carbon on an urban scale is too often overlooked. But not anymore... Urban Decarb is a new digital tool which brings #embodiedcarbon into focus on an urban scale. With support from @rambollgroup, our team of architects, urbanists, and computational designers have developed Urban Decarb to solve this challenge; a tool for integrating otherwise siloed carbon knowledge of urban components in the early design stages of #urbandevelopment. Urban Decarb marks a significant step in utilizing embodied and operational carbon as design parameters in urban planning by looking at the city as a whole – from buildings to roads, parking, landscaping, and infrastructural urban systems. “As our cities and populations grow in tandem with #climatechange, designing for healthy living and resilience at an urban scale is more crucial than ever. We want to help our clients globally to assess the carbon footprint of existing urban areas leading up to redevelopment and transformation. The purpose of this is to ensure that all stakeholders - from property owners and municipalities to designers, engineers, and even community members - are making informed decisions surrounding the project’s environmental impact,” says Global Design Director, Urbanism, Signe Kongebro. A confident, clear, and poetic gesture for the people in the heart of downtown Sydney. Lighthouse at Darling Park is designed to be both a human scale destination and a true urban icon on the skyline – a beacon for the people’s harbor. This philosophy is felt at every level, from where the tower meets the skyline to, most importantly, where it meets people at the ground. The ground-level comprises 10.000m2 of park space, the most expansive addition of public space central Sydney has seen in a century. Lighthouse at Darling Park is a microcosm of Sydney itself, a city unique in its ability to entwine a friendly, local community atmosphere within a cosmopolitan city.
