It's quite common for staff to assume first time GentleBirth moms are 'only' in early labor and even to refuse doing a vaginal exam (assuming mom wants it) as they've assumed mom's body is not 'doing' anything'. This mom experienced labor sensations as manageable, there's lots of reasons for this but we know from research that emotion regulation changes pain perception. The more stressed and anxious you are the more the brain perceives these sensations as threats - and not a normal functioning of the female body. The more you can practice being grounded and centered during your pregnancy with small stuff the less stress you experience when the big stuff comes (and it IS coming). Pregnancy is a great time to LET THAT SH*T GO. You have time to scroll social media so you have time to prepare for your birth in a way that sets you up with such a huge advantage for the next part of this exciting journey - parenting.
