On August 1, Meta said it had officially begun the process of “ending news availability in Canada” on its social media platforms. Meta communications director Andy Stone said the changes would take effect over a few weeks. This rollout came as a result of Bill C-18, also known as the Online News Act, becoming law. The Online News Act received royal assent in June and is slated to come into force in about six months. It requires tech giants like Meta and Google to pay Canadian news organizations for linking to or repurposing their content online. To dodge this expense, the tech giants have decided not to host news in the country, limiting Canadians’ access to information about current ongoings and leaving Canada’s news media industry in a dust cloud of uncertainty. Both news media workers and consumers are sharing their worries on social media. Many are shocked that several international news sources have also disappeared from Facebook and Instagram in Canada. Daily Hive is a Canadian digital publisher that reports on current events. We, too, have been targeted by this blackout. Many of our followers have complained that they can no longer see our social content. However, there are still ways to stay in the loop and support local journalism👇 🗞️Daily Hive website 🗞️Newsletters 🗞️Flipboard 🗞️Apple News 🗞️ X (Twitter) 🗞️TikTok For those who can still see this post, please let your friends and family who have been blocked know how they can keep following our local news 🙏 #dailyhivevan
A highly prominent fountain centrepiece for the waterfront public plaza at Lonsdale Quay will be permanently removed. In a bulletin today, the City of North Vancouver says the phased removal process will begin on Monday, with the fountain and mosaic tile work set to be permanently removed 💔 The municipal government states the mosaic tiles are still in good condition, but the required upgrades to the fountain to “current safety, health, and environmental standards is cost prohibitive.” During City Council’s deliberations over the matter this past spring, it was estimated the retrofit would cost over $300,000. The fountain has not been activated since 2020 due to mechanical failure and safety issues 😬 After the removal of the fountain and sculpture, the footprint will be temporarily paved over with asphalt, before the permanent design of using cast-in-place concrete for turning the space into expanded seating. The final design of the space is still being planned by Lonsdale Quay and the municipal government, which is expected to be finalized in 2024. Are you sad to see this monument go? More than two dozen dogs are getting veterinary care after being found in horrific and inhumane conditions 💔🐾 According to the BC SPCA, the 30 Dachshund dogs were seized from an Okanagan breeder recently due to an investigation. The dogs range from four months old to five years old and were found to be living in small crates dirtied with urine and feces. They are not socialized, are afraid of people, and have to receive treatment for a variety of health issues, including dental disease and exposure to high ammonia levels. It’s unclear what the timeline for their recovery will be. However, the BC SPCA says when they are available for adoption, you will be able to apply to be considered through the website. A two-vehicle crash in BC has claimed the lives of four BC Wildfire Service sub-contractors who had been travelling home after battling a fire in the province. The crash happened early Tuesday at 2 am on Highway 1 near Walhachin, which is less than an hour west of Kamloops in central BC. The four wildfire workers were in a pick-up truck, and early indications are that the driver of the vehicle “failed to navigate a bend in the road to the right, crossing the centre line and colliding with the semi-truck head on.” All four people inside the pick-up truck died. The semi-tractor trailer caught fire, and the driver was able to escape before the vehicle was engulfed. Cpl. James Grandy, spokesperson for the BC RCMP Southeast District, identified the individuals as BC Wildfire Service sub-contractors, and said they were heading home after helping with fire suppression efforts. “This year has been particularly challenging for the BC Wildfire Service, with several of its members facing injuries or losing their lives. Our thoughts are with the friends and family of those who help keep our Province safe,” the BC RCMP statement reads in part. For full details visit DailyHive.com #dailyhivevan
