Cheetahs are often taken from the wild illegally, which was the case with this small cub that we tried to save earlier this week. In the Horn of Africa, rural livestock farmers are in conflict with wildlife. A lack of arable land and lack of access to water exacerbates the situation. Sometimes farmers will take cubs in a misguided attempt to prevent predation. They might try to keep them or they will try to pass them along. Unfortunately, sometimes passing them along includes selling them to traffickers. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ CCF Director Dr. Laurie Marker and Senior Veterinarian Dr. Iman Memarian traveled out to the port city of Berbera, Somaliland to pick up a 3-6 month old cheetah cub. When we finally reached the ministry official and the cub, we found that he was in very poor condition. He suffered from severe shock due to dehydration and digestive bleeding as a result of inappropriate nutrition. Despite our best efforts, we could not save him. Released cheetah Georgia and her two cubs are still doing well in Erindi Private Game Reserve (@erindinamibia). The family is being monitored via tracking collar on mum, as the cubs prepare to move away from her and live on their own we will most likely do a health exam and give them their very own collars. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The data that we collect is very valuable for the global scientific community. Back in May, Dr. Laurie Marker was honored to receive VIP visitors from Taiwan at the CCF Safe Houses in Hargeisa, Somaliland. Ambassador Allen Chenhwa Lou, the Representative of Taiwan in the Republic of Somaliland; Minister (deputy ambassador) Mr. Chen-chi Wu; Deputy Counselor Mr. Yun-bo Chen; and Third Secretary Mr. Shuo-wei Chou, toured the project. Dr. Marker shared CCF's Master Plan for the Cheetah Rescue & Conservation Centre at Geed-Deeble, and they spoke about possibilities for collaboration on cheetah conservation initiatives in Somaliland. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We’ve also had visitors from the UK, Denmark and the EU. The group was visiting to observe the elections held on 31 May. Fun fact: cheetahs have semi-retractable claws, this means that their claws are always ready to dig into the ground for when they need to reach speeds of up to 110 km/hour! (70mph). CCF's newest cheetah cub Khaleesi turned 10 weeks old on Thursday! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ She is growing bigger by the day and getting more and more active. She is currently 3.4kg in weight, and eating about 400g of meat a day! She gets a diet with a mixture of milk, mince meat, and is now also eating meat off a bone. All of her baby teeth have come through, and she is starting to look and act more like a cheetah. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ She is currently living in the nursery and has a fenced outdoor area to explore. She had made friends with some of the older retired dogs Isha (LGD) and Finn (Scat Detection), but also with the cheetahs in the nearby enclosures through the fence. Every day is a new adventure getting used to new sights and smells. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Backstory: Her mother Daenerys was released in February of 2019 and we had been monitoring her, collecting her satellite collar data ever since. In February 2021, CCF and @ErindiPrivateGameReserve staff noticed that there was a problem. Daenerys had a broken leg so we took her back to our Centre. Animal healthcare staff also noticed she was pregnant.
