This is a serious issue. We’ve personally been seeing this too.. read this post by our friends at @4ocean - The global outbreak of the novel coronavirus has required people from all walks of life to begin using personal protective equipment (PPE) in their everyday lives. Unfortunately, as we’re sure you’ve seen across your social media platforms and in your own commute to the grocery store, people are abandoning their used gloves and masks by disposing of them on the ground right outside of their cars or destinations. This is problematic for a couple of reasons. First, this is not sanitary and defeats the purpose of wearing the PPE in the first place. Second, these materials are lightweight and could easily be blown by the wind into nearby waterways or get picked up by marine life causing illness or even death. Some responsible ways to dispose of these products: 1. Donate them - If you have an abundance of unused gloves or masks, consider donating your extras to medical professionals so they are properly protected on the front lines. 2. Recycle them - Certain markets will accept latex gloves in their recycling as long as they are disinfected and sanitized. Check with your local WMS. 3. Collection Bins - There are some companies out there (i.e. TerraCycle) who offer collection bins online. Order a bin, fill it, and ship it back to them for proper recycling. 4.Waste Receptacle - There is almost always a proper waste receptacle within walking distance. Place those gloves and masks directly into these for transport to landfill.
