A couple of months ago I had a dream that I was chopping my hair with a knife, like a large machete. The grandmothers in my dream were telling me that cutting my hair would help me let go of the pain I endured in the years prior. That I would be able to release any trauma and negativity that was clinging on to me. This made sense to me, I haven’t cut my hair in years! And I have experienced a lot of trauma since. So this dream sat with me for awhile, I often thought of it. I knew there would be a day that I would cut my hair. My husband recommended that I wait until after my IFWTO photoshoot to cut my hair, and he was right, I needed the long locks for the shoot. So here we are, a couple weeks after the shoot and I finally decided to cut my hair. My stylist was Romanian and I explained to him my dream, he totally understood and packed up all my locks for me to keep. At the next full moon I’ll be burning it in ceremony. I love my new haircut and honestly I feel so much lighter and stronger. My hair will always grow back but it feels good to honour dreams. 💕
This statement is not true. They did not contact me yesterday morning, they emailed me through my website at 8:30pm with a request for me to contact them. It was late in the evening and I was on the road for a work related task. I then received a DM from them at 1pm this afternoon but I was at a family outting with my kids for a the day. They did not mention compensation nor stated any apology. I have reached out to my own legal advisors and we will be working on an appropriate response. At this time I will not be engaging in conversation and only keeping records.
#boycott @quarkstyle In 2014 I was commissioned by Manitobah Mukluks for a limited edition collection to be sold exclusively at TSC. The collection included the half-size boot like the image shown here, and the full boots, as well as ankle moccasins and the all suede. The beadwork design I submitted is called “North Star” and was dedicated to my late grandmother, Fabiola Spence. And if you are a fan of my work you will know that she has played an important role in my work as an artist and designer. The beadwork was then, with my permission, refurbished for the Waterproof Snowy Owl Collection. This design that @quarkstyle Urban Trails has manufactured is an exact replica of my work. Used without permission. I have on file all original designs, dated and signed, as well as original contracts and email correspondence with Manitobah. I don’t make a lot of money from my artwork, I supplement my art with community work as a social worker and educator to provide for my family. It’s a sad shame that a non-indigenous company can so easily scoop right in and literally take from the mouths of my family.
I miss her everyday, she was my best friend. The kindest, most loving being. Nokum, I am not perfect but the good in me is because of you. Miinah kawapminten. Mitinih kisakihetin. ❤️
