I remember looking at myself in the mirror and not being able to recognize my own reflection. I had just finished high school and had spent 9 years in boarding school. I went to boarding school when I was 7 and I remember wailing as my thick long natural hair was being cut so that I could join my new school. I loved my hair - even then. So, trust me when I was devastated. My attachment to my hair came from the fact that not only did I go to an Indian school where all the girls and female teachers had long wavy hair but also I was the only black student in the school. My envy led me to love my hair, I took care of it and it was taken away.Fast forward to this moment, I'm looking at my reflection in the mirror, my hair, now permed, chin length, thinned out, split ends and dry. "Cut it". Immediately the barber began to shave my head into a Mohawk. When he was done, I liked who I saw in the mirror. A version of myself that was fearless. Yes, I liked that girl. I was that girl for three years.Time flew by and soon I was back in the mirror again. "Who am I?" The question that has fuelled my life. So I decided to grow back my hair from scratch and thats when I discovered Mikalla Hair Essentials while shopping around on facebook groups and blog sites. Natural, Kenyan and easily available. Mikalla is now part of my identity and I love it.It has been two years since I began my natural hair journey and I feel more and more like myself with each day.
For as long as I could remember, I always had relaxed hair. This happened through my mom because compared to my younger sister, I had the coarser hair and so it was "unmanageable". My mother was a salonist, so that was the only life I knew when it came to hair. My turning point was when I was 6 months pregnant and I remember going for my regular relaxer appointment and I got really bad burns and that was when I promised myself that I would not have my daughter go through the same. It had to start with me and so when she was born, I shaved my hair. I remember researching online through every possible channel on how to manage my new hair and I learnt about hair products that were great for it. I also learnt that not all products could work and so I was skeptical about investing in expensive products and have them fail. On a hair group that was on Facebook, I learned of Mikalla and I went for it. What struck me about this product was the "minty" smell and how it felt on my scalp. It was perfect for me! It was the first product I tried and it was perfect for me! I honestly put in the work when it came to my hair and now my daughter and I are reaping the benefits. I am really in love with my hair and I appreciate the thought that goes into natural hair products. Lifesavers! The rest is history!
