In my recent article for @outlooktraveller I write about a must-see museum trail in Armenia. These museums are not just repositories of dusty artefacts; they are vibrant storytelling hubs that bring Armenia’s rich heritage to life. πŸ‘‰πŸ» History Museum of Armenia: This three-story edifice, now a cornerstone of Armenian cultural heritage, houses an astonishing collection of 400,000 artefacts, including unique archaeological finds, numismatic treasures, and ethnographic specimens. While the museum’s first two floors showcase a rotating array of temporary exhibits, it is the third floor that holds the permanent collection. @historymuseumofarmenia_ πŸ‘‰πŸ» Lusik Aguletsi House Museum: Agulesti, a renowned Armenian painter, is affectionately called the β€œVan Gogh of Armenia.” Her home, appropriately named β€œArmenia in one room,” serves as a poignant tribute to Agulesti’s profound love for her homeland. Founded in 1982, and housed in the artist’s former home, this heritage house museum, nestled on Muratsan Street, is dedicated to the life and work of Lusik Agulesti. @aguletsi.museum πŸ‘‰πŸ» Dzitoghtsyan House Museum of National Architecture and Urban Life: Another captivating museum that ranks among the top 3 must-visit places in Armenia, is the Dzitoghtsyan House Museum of National Architecture and Urban Life in Gyumri. Built in 1872 by the affluent Dzitoghtsyan family, this stately residence made with red tuff stone, stands as a timeless testament to the city’s architectural heritage. It was converted into a museum in 1984. #museumsofarmenia #armenia #thehiddentrack #travelwithkrazybutterfly #indiantravelblogger #solofemaletraveler #travelwriter #traveljournalist #indianwomenwriters #historymuseumofarmenia #lusikaguletsimuseum #dzitoghtsyanmuseum

One of the greatest joys of travel is immersing yourself in new cultures and meeting new people. There is something truly magical about stepping outside your comfort zone and exploring a world completely different from your own. πŸ‘‰πŸ» You can taste exotic foods, hear beautiful music, and learn about customs and traditions that have been passed down for generations. And what could be more delightful than encountering mascots dressed in their national costumes? These colorful characters add a touch of whimsy and fun to any travel experience. They are often ambassadors of their culture, sharing their traditions and folklore with visitors. #travel #solofemaletraveler #travelwithkrazybutterfly #armenia #gyumriarmenia #thehiddentrack #traveladdict #travelgram #travelphotography #traveldiaries

#byline In my recent article for @firstpost I recount my journey through Armenia, where I waltzed through Yerevan, the vivacious capital, where history and modernity harmonise amidst a symphony of ancient sights and modern marvels. πŸ‘‰πŸ» Venturing to Gyumri, Armenia's second-largest city, I was transported to a bygone era. Its streets, lined with centuries-old buildings, exuding an old-world charm, each cobblestone whispering tales of a resilient spirit. πŸ‘‰πŸ» At Gyumri Art Gallery, where vibrant canvases capture the city's essence, you will feel like an art connoisseur amidst a masterpiece. The Gyumri Museum of architecture and urban life chronicled the city's resilient past, making me realize that history isn't just about dates and battles; it's about the spirit of people. πŸ‘‰πŸ» Dilijan, Armenia's serene resort town, embraced me with its tranquil atmosphere and breathtaking natural beauty. The monasteries, nestled amidst the rugged terrain, stood as testaments to Armenia's enduring architectural prowess, making me realize that even amidst nature's grandeur, man's creations can still be awe. A serene stroll by the crystal-clear waters of Lake Sevan completed my Dilijan experience, leaving me mesmerized by the tranquillity that enveloped the region, feeling like I had found my own personal Shangri-La. https://www.firstpost.com/opinion/why-armenia-should-be-your-next-travel-destination-13456102.html/ #armenia #thehiddentrack #yerevan #gyumri #dilijan #visitarmenia #armeniatravel #travelwithkrazybutterfly #solofemaletraveler #travelwriter #indiantravelblogger

#byline In my latest article for the @deccanherald I delve into the fascinating world of Bali's Family Temples, intimate sanctuaries nestled within every Balinese household. πŸ‘‰πŸ» Family temples, known locally as sanggah or pemerajan, are not laces of worship; they are the spiritual heart of the Balinese home. They serve as tangible links to a family's ancestral heritage, embodying the deep reverence and respect that Balinese people have for their ancestors. πŸ‘‰πŸ» Each family temple typically consists of three main shrines: Pelinggih Ratu Ngurah, a shrine dedicated to the family's founder or patriarch; Kemulan Taksu, a shrine dedicated to the family's spiritual guides, and Pelinggih Taksu is a shrine dedicated to the family's patron deity. πŸ‘‰πŸ» These shrines are meticulously maintained and adorned with offerings of flowers, fruits, and incense. Regular ceremonies are held at the family temple, presided over by the family priest or pemangku. Due to their sacred nature, family temples are typically off-limits to outsiders. However, some temples, such as Pura Taman Ayun in Ubud, have designated areas where visitors can observe ceremonies and offerings from a distance. https://www.deccanherald.com/lifestyle/travel/balis-unique-family-temples-2792969 #bali #balilife #baliindonesia #familytemples #travelwithkrazybutterfly #templesofinstagram #templesofbali #familytemplesbali #balinesetemples #balinesetemple

One of the oldest Armenian medieval architectural wonders I visited in Armenia was the Monastery of Geghard. πŸ‘‰πŸ» Formerly known as Ayrivank (Monastery in the Cave) due to its rock-cut construction, Geghard is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that seamlessly blends human artistry with the natural beauty of its surroundings. πŸ‘‰πŸ» Emerging from the depths of the 4th century, Geghard stands as a testament to Armenia's embrace of Christianity. Saint Gregory the Illuminator laid the foundation of this revered site at the site of a sacred spring nestled within a cave. πŸ‘‰πŸ» The main architectural complex that culminated during the 13th century AD features a cathedral, an adjoining narthex, and a collection of rock-cut churches. The Proshyan princes' family tomb, Papak's and Ruzukan's tomb-chapel, and numerous rock-cut cross-stones (khachkars) enrich the complex. πŸ‘‰πŸ» The KathoghikΓ¨ (main church) is the heart of the Geghard Monastery complex. It adheres to the classic Armenian form, with an equal-armed cross inscribed within a square plan. Its dome perched atop a square base is connected to the foundation through intricate vaulting. A gavit bridges the KathoghikΓ¨ with the first rock-cut church, carved entirely into the rock before 1250. πŸ‘‰πŸ» At the heart of the relief stands a formidable ram's head, its jaws firmly grasping a chain snaking around the necks of two lions. Below the chain, an eagle with outstretched wings clutches a delicate lamb in its talons, symbolizing both strength and protectiveness. This heraldic emblem is widely believed to represent the coat of arms of the Proshian Princes. πŸ‘‰πŸ» Ascending an external staircase leads to the second zhamatoun, a chamber that holds the tombs of the princes Merik and Grigor. Beyond the ramparts, stands the revered St. Astvatsatsin Chapel, the most ancient preserved monument within the Geghard complex. The chapel's walls bear the marks of time, etched with engraved inscriptions that date back to 1177 and 1181 AD. #geghardmonastery #geghard #armenia #travel #thehiddentrack #travelwithkrazybutterfly #visitarmenia #churchesoftheworld

My guide mentioned that Gyumri is known as the 'City of a Thousand Doors'. While I'm not sure if that's an exact number, I did encounter several beautiful doors during my stroll along the cobblestone paths. πŸ‘‰πŸ» The doors were intricately carved and painted, and they added to the city's unique charm. I especially liked the way the doors were often set back from the street, creating a sense of mystery and intrigue. πŸ‘‰πŸ» The tradition of making wooden doors dates back to the 19th century when Gyumri was a major centre of trade and commerce. The city's artisans were known for their skill in woodworking, and they produced a wide variety of doors to meet the needs of the city's residents. There are also a number of shops in Gyumri that sell wooden doors, both new and old. Gyumri has been rebuilt several times after being destroyed by earthquakes, and the wooden doors are a reminder of Gyumri's long and rich history. #gyumri #gyumri_armenia #gyumricity #armenia #thehiddentrack #gyumridoors #travelwithkrazybutterfly

Lake Sevan, Armenia's shimmering sapphire, sits nestled amidst the towering peaks of the Gegharkunik Province, its crystalline waters reflecting the heavens above. πŸ‘‰πŸ» This alpine gem, perched at an altitude of 6,234 feet, is not only Armenia's largest expanse of water but also one of the world's highest-altitude lakes, a title it proudly shares with Lake Titicaca in South America. πŸ‘‰πŸ» Its shores, a tapestry of verdant hills and rocky outcrops, beckon travellers to explore its hidden wonders. Ancient monasteries, like Sevanavank and Hayravank, stand sentinel, their weathered stones whispering tales of a bygone era. πŸ‘‰πŸ» The Sevanavank peninsula, a verdant finger jutting into the lake, offers breathtaking panoramic vistas, while the Noratus peninsula, with its sea of intricately carved khachkars, speaks of a rich cultural heritage. πŸ‘‰πŸ» As the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of gold and crimson, Lake Sevan transforms into a mesmerizing spectacle. The gentle lapping of waves against the shore, the soft rustle of the wind through the trees, and the symphony of birdsong create a serenade that soothes the soul. Whether you seek adventure, tranquillity, or simply a chance to reconnect with nature, Lake Sevan promises an unforgettable experience. #lakesevan #lakesevanarmenia #armenia #thehiddentrack #lakesofinstagram #lakesoftheworld #solofemaletraveler #travelwithkrazybutterfly #solotraveler

Perched atop a lush hill overlooking the verdant Tavush Province, Haghartsin Monastery stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Armenian artistry. This 10th-century gem, a masterpiece of Armenian architecture, has gracefully weathered the storms of time, its weathered stones whispering tales of a bygone era. πŸ‘‰πŸ» The air is hushed, save for the gentle murmur of prayers and the rustling of leaves in the gentle breeze. The monastery’s buildings, with their intricate carvings and harmonious proportions, exude an aura of serenity that washes over the soul. πŸ‘‰πŸ» Haghartsin Monastery is more than just a place of worship; it is a sanctuary, a refuge from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. Here, amidst the towering peaks and whispering pines, one can find solace, a chance to reconnect with the inner self and rediscover the simple beauty of existence. Nestled amidst the verdant depths of Bandhavgarh National Park lies a mesmerizing sight that transcends time, the 10th-century Shesh Shaiya Lord Vishnu statue. This colossal sandstone sculpture, measuring a staggering 40 feet in length, serenely rests upon seven sculpted coils of the mighty serpent Shesha. πŸ‘‰πŸ» A testament to the enduring legacy of the Kalchuri period, a Brahmi inscription etched right behind the statue whispers tales of a bygone era. Its weathered surface speaks of a time when artisans poured their hearts and souls into crafting masterpieces that would stand the test of time. And if that wasn’t enough to captivate your senses, a recently restored Shivalinga, standing tall beside Lord Vishnu, serves as a reminder of the harmonious coexistence of Hindu deities. So, if your wanderings ever lead you to the enchanting forests of Bandhavgarh, make sure to seek out this hidden gem. #sheshshaiya #lordvishnustatue #bandhavgarhfort #bandhavgarhforest #samodesafarilodge #mptourism #samodehotels #ancientstatues #dekhoapnadesh #incredibleindia #travelwithkrazybutterfly #madhyapradeshtourism

Standing atop the imposing Black Fortress of Gyumri, I am swept away by the panoramic vista that unfolds before me. The city stretches out like a tapestry of terracotta roofs and verdant hills, its heart pulsating with the rhythm of Armenian life. πŸ‘‰πŸ» The Black Fortress, also known as Sev Berd, is a testament to Gyumri's rich history, of battles fought and won, of empires risen and fallen. Its black stone walls, worn smooth by the caress of time, bear witness to the passage of centuries, each weathered surface a silent chronicle of the city's triumphs and tribulations. πŸ‘‰πŸ» This impressive round fortress was built in the 1830s. It was constructed out of black tuff, a type of volcanic rock, and was designed to defend the city from potential attacks from the Ottoman Empire. The Fortress is a reminder of the city's strategic importance in the past. πŸ‘‰πŸ» The Black Fortress has been transformed into a cultural and sports centre, and even its rooms have been opened to accommodate performing artists. I’m the basement of the fortress lies a well that plunges 22 meters into the earth. Though currently off-limits to visitors, this hidden gem is slated to be unveiled to the public in the near future.
