Standing on the grounds of yet another of Europe's oldest and well-known castles. Perched high (over 200 meters/nearly 700 feet) above the conflux of the Danube and Morava Rivers where the current borders of Austria and Slovakia intertwine the origins of Devín Castle date back to the 800s. It has been occupied by wide swaths of historical empires ranging from the Celts, Romans and Ottomans to the Nazis and Communists, for whom it served as a forceful rod beneath which the Iron Curtain was draped. Rumor has it that an episode of Game of Thrones was filmed here, which is fitting given the lore of lovestruck maidens leaping to their deaths from one of the castle towers. * * * #castle #austria #slovakia #danube #morava #communism #gameofthrones #beard #instatravel #cntraveler #dw_travel

These doors at the entrance to "Dům u dvou zlatých lvů“ (House at Two Gold Lions) could almost make one believe that they were designed by @versace with their robust lions guarding the entrance. However, original construction of this house in the Prague 1 district began in the 1700s and culminated with the addition of a third floor in the early 1900s. On a humorous note, every time I pass by these doors I am reminded of the expression "if it doesn't open it's not your door." But what happens when one encounters a set of double doors, like these? * * * #prague #czechrepublic #doors #blue #lion #gothic #renaissance #baroque #versace #design #instatravel #cntraveler #visitcz #dw_travel

“Prague doesn’t let you go…This mother has claws.” It’s a famous quote by Prague native son and celebrated author Franz Kafka. His truthful quote is featured in my most recent blog post. In celebration of 17 years of living here in my adopted home country, it briefly highlights 17 random changes I have witnessed over the years following the collapse of communism just a decade before my arrival. Follow the link in my bio to access the full story. * * * Image backstory: Franz Kafka grew up in Josefov, the Jewish ghetto, just around the corner from this fantastical building that happens to be the oldest Jewish Town Hall in the world. Dating from the 16th century, its tower features two different clocks. The upper clock displays traditional Roman numerals, while the lower clock features Hebrew numerals and the hands turn counter-clockwise. * * * #Prague #Czech #Kafka #Jewish #clock #communism #travel #visitcz #praguestagram #cathaycreators #lifewelltravelled #cntraveler #bbctravel #natgeotravel

The tower of state spies. I took this photo on a remarkably sunny autumn day along the banks of the Vltava River. The most significant aspect is the Šítkovská tower with baroque onion dome and its riveting history. Originally constructed in 1489 and standing 47 meters (154 feet) tall, it has since been rebuilt several times including after a siege by the Swedes in 1648. Its original purpose was as a water tower to service nearby homes and fountains. Centuries later, during communism, it had a much more sinister purpose. The tower was used by the StB, the communist secret police, as an observation point to spy on then writer and dissident Václav Havel who lived across the street. Ironically, Havel went on to become the first President of the Czech Republic after the fall of communism. #prague #praha #czechrepublic #europe #vltava #river #tower #sitkovska #baroque #havel #communism #travel #instatravel #travelpics #instavacation #visitcz #czechia #praguestagram #cathaycreators #lifewelltravelled #fourseasons #cntraveler #bbctravel #natgeotravel

The sun singes the sky as it tucks itself in for the night behind the world’s largest ancient castle. I captured this shot on a late autumn evening as all of Prague was looking up delighting at this purplish fireball of a sky. Dating from the late 800s, Prague Castle has a long, varied and even wild history, with some of its interior halls being used as hunting grounds for the delight and entertainment of Bohemian kings and their court centuries ago. The focal point is the cathedral tower of St. Vitus Cathedral which is nearly 30 stories tall and adorned with a gilded figure of the Lion of Bohemia, part of the Lesser coat of arms of the Czech Republic. #prague #praha #czechrepublic #europe #praguecastle #prazskyhrad #stvituscathedral #malastrana #vltava #bohemia #autumn #river #travel #instatravel #tourism #traveling #getaway #lovetravel #travelpics #instavacation #discoverczechrepublic #czechtourism #visitcz #praguestagram #cntraveler #bbctravel #natgeotravel

Dancing on a carpet of orange. Prague is full of delightful contrasts and I was thrilled to capture that feeling with this shot of the “Czech Musicians” statues at Senovážné náměstí in the peak of fall. As the trees began to shed their leaves, the pink roses in the garden in the background still proudly showed off their blooms. The four dancing statues positioned around the fountain represent several major rivers of the world: The Andean flutist symbolizes the Amazon; the Indian Guitarist the Ganges; the New Orleans trumpeter the Mississippi; and the violinist the Danube. The installation was created by renowned artist Anna Chromy and installed in 2002. #prague #praha #czechrepublic #europe #senovaznenamesti #statues #annachromy #fountain #amazon #ganges #mississippi #danube #annachromy #travel #instatravel #tourism #traveling #getaway #lovetravel #travelpics #instavacation #discoverczechrepublic #czechtourism #visitcz #praguestagram #cntraveler #bbctravel #natgeotravel

I captured this image of Náplavka on one of the final, and coincidentally hottest, days of summer. Situated along the east bank of the river Vltava below the Palackého most (Palackého bridge), the area began receiving an influx of attention and investment the past few years and is now considered one of the city’s top venues for taking in the remarkable views, sipping on world-renowned Czech brews and people watching. In the right quadrant of the image you can also see the infamous Pražský hrad (Prague Castle) complex as well as St. Vitus Cathedral. #prague #praha #czechrepublic #europe #naplavka #vltava #river #praguecastle #hipster #summer #beergarden #travel #instatravel #tourism #traveling #getaway #lovetravel #travelpics #instavacation #discoverczechrepublic #czechtourism #visitcz #czechia #praguestagram #cntraveler #natgeotravel

Don’t be scared (or don't worry). That’s what the Czech word ‘neboj’ (pronounced nay-boy) means in English. A short while ago I noticed this word painted above the entrance to Žižkov Tunnel for the very first time. The 300 meter long tunnel which runs underneath Vítkov Park was opened in 1953 and its original purpose was as an emergency fallout shelter in the event of nuclear war. A friend who was with me at the time I took this photo also never recalled seeing this word painted above the tunnel entrance. We remarked that it was a highly appropriate sign, not just for those that may be wary to walk through the tunnel, but also in light of some personally challenging times. Thanks to all those who have stayed tuned in to my channel during my hiatus from regularly posting and for all your kind words of encouragement and support. I’ve got plenty of new content lined up to share so please continue to stay tuned. #prague #praha #czechrepublic #europe #zizkov #zizkovskytunel #karlin #vitkov #nuclear #dontworry #nofear #tiles #white #intothelight #travel #instatravel #tourism #traveling #getaway #lovetravel #travelpics #instavacation #discoverczechrepublic #czechtourism #visitcz #czechia #praguestagram #cntraveler #natgeotravel

Here in Prague I had the honor of hosting a fantastic group of digital nomads from @theremoteexperience last summer. And although I typically don’t do selfies I couldn’t refrain when it came time to part ways with two of the finest ladies in the world @jillianruth and @emilykollmyer. Prague misses you — please come back soon! Meanwhile I’m looking forward to creating memorable experiences for a new group of participants from The Remote Experience coming this August. More about how I do this is available on my blog in the story entitled “Our Angel in Prague.” #prague #praha #czechrepublic #czechia #europe #theremoteexperience #digitalnomad #wanderlust #explore #travelabroad #summer #experience #travel #instatravel #tourism #traveling #getaway #lovetravel #travelpics #instavacation #discoverczechrepublic #czechtourism #visitcz #czechia #praguestagram #cntraveler #natgeotravel

Peering into Staroměstské náměstí (Old Town Square), one of Prague’s most beloved quarters. It has served various purposes since the 13th century, including marketplace trading, jousting and even executions. One of its most popular features is the Pražský orloj (Prague Astronomical Clock) where visitors flock to view figures of the Apostles and of Death chiming at the top of each new hour. #prague #praha #czechrepublic #europe #oldtownsquare #staromestskenamesti #pragueorloj #astronomicalclock #tynchurch #blue #clouds #architecture #travel #instatravel #tourism #traveling #getaway #lovetravel #travelpics #instavacation #discoverczechrepublic #czechtourism #visitcz #czechia #praguestagram #cntraveler #natgeotravel

The Grand Hotel Evropa, one of my favorite buildings gracing Wenceslas Square, was once known as the most luxurious hotel in all of central Europe. Although currently undergoing a much longed-for reconstruction, if only its walls could talk. One of its most prominent residents was Sir Nicholas Winton, who organized the rescue of 669 children, mainly Jewish, from then Czechoslovakia on the eve of World War II. Slated to reopen this year, the new iteration will have 154 rooms and amenities befitting a five-star hotel. #prague #praha #czechrepublic #europe #wenceslassquare #vaclavskenamesti #grandhotelevropa #ww2 #sirnicholaswinton #jewish #hotel #5star #architecture #travel #instatravel #tourism #traveling #getaway #lovetravel #travelpics #instavacation #discoverczechrepublic #czechtourism #visitcz #praguestagram #cntraveler #natgeotravel #iphoneonly

Spri-nter light, that crisp form of light that appears as spring begins to overtake winter, is seen here bathing Jindřišská věž (St. Henry’s Tower). Although it has had several rebuilds, construction was originally started in the late 1400s. At over 65m high, almost the equivalent of a 20 story building, it is the highest freestanding bell tower in Prague. I also happen to be lucky enough to pass by it often when walking to and from the city center. #prague #praha #czechrepublic #jindrisska #jindrisskavez #henrystower #bells #belltower #light #architecture #travel #instatravel #tourism #traveling #getaway #lovetravel #travelpics #instavacation #discoverczechrepublic #czechtourism #visitcz #praguestagram #cntraveler #natgeotravel #iphoneonly
