M A T E R I A L T E S T // "papier" aus pilzen. ich wollte wissen, ob das geht - jepp, klappt super! falls also wer gern mal pilze sammeln würde, aber (wie ich) keine ahnung davon hat - machts einfach trotzdem und dann eben statt essen papier daraus. pilze und wasser mixen reicht schon. extended variante: etwas altpapier oder textilreste dazu, vielleicht auch agar agar und glycerin, dann wirds robuster und flexibler. any questions? 😊 #ecodesign #biodesign #bioart #waste #recycling #upclycing #mushroom  #reuse #sustainable  #mushroombased #myceliumdesign #myceliumtextile #biocomposite #biobased #renewable #myceliummagic #materialmatters #materialdriven #materialdesign #materialscience #materialfuture #tactiledesign #materialengineering

From a while ago. Experiments with horsehair collected at a ranch. I'm constantly exploring boundaries between art, science and design, between aesthetics and disgust. There are already some stunning projects using hair in different contexts like "the metabolic factory" by thomas vailly who made cups out of them or another one called "animal coffin" - all biobased and biodegradable.  #biocomposite #biobased #renewable  #materialmatters #materialscience #materialfuture #tactiledesign #materialengineering #materialresearch #materialrevolution #materialinnovation #materialdesign #biodesign #biotextiles #biomaterials #circulardesign #biobasedmaterials #biochemistry #biodesigner #materialmatters #wasteasaresource #materialdriven #ecodesign #greendesign #biodegradable #sustainability #circulareconomy #design

Here are some pictures of oyster mycelium i cultivated on agar agar as a growth medium. Nothing fancy, just for research, but pretty beautiful when dried. The white mycelium is kinda fleecy, while agar agar dried glossy and sturdy like hard plastic. Two pretty contrary surface finishes united in one biodegradable piece. These are old pictures, cause corona-irony as a parent is, that you don't have time while everyone else has. Pressure couldn't be higher to perform while everyone optimizes their life/hobbies/careers and so on #yougetthepoint It's hard to accept the feelings of being left behind, but it opens a new perspective i haven't had before. Greateful for that, grateful for our little girl full of joy, but craving for time to break out of this confinement and work on my projects. But at least, having a child didn't immerse in an existential crisis for us. #blessed #ecodesign #biodesign #bioart  #waste #recycling #mycelium #upclycing #mushroom  #reuse #sustainable #productdesign #mushroombased #myceliumdesign #myceliumtextile #biocomposite #biobased #renewable  #myceliummagic #materialmatters #materialdriven #materialdesign #materialscience #materialfuture #tactiledesign #materialengineering #oystermycelium #planetcentereddesign

Another one of many many many many many many many many many (ok, you got it) material tests along the way till i found the one i'm currently working with. Back from an inner Instagram vacation. :) I already wrote so much about this material and have shown different stages of its process. BUT I haven't proven yet, that it's really sewable. And it really really is! (As you can see :D ) The shown example of a pretty miserably sewn pencil bag (bc I don't sew often) is made of the same material I've shown already and was dyed with black tea because I also wanted to test natural dyeing. So in summary, this is a pretty valid pencil case with a leather-like surface feel made out of yarn waste, coloured with black tea waste, both of them would have gone to landfill otherwise. Waste as a resource level 100! The next steps are: testing more natural dyeing methods (already started with phytocyanin) and testing the durability of the products in daily usage. #wasteasaresource #materialdriven #materialmatters #ecodesign #greendesign #bioplastic #bioplastics #biodegradable #sustainability #circulareconomy #upcycling #recyclingdesign #recycling #materialexperiments #materialdesigner #materiality #smartmaterials #circulardesign #materialnarratives #materiality #ecologicalart #ecodesign #cradletocradle #greenrevolution #naturaldyeing

Cotton cup's big brother. Made out of a composite material that can be either moulded or sewn - whatever you like. And was waste before! yarn waste from @_knoten.punkt_ 🙃 #wasteasaresource #materialdriven #materialmatters #ecodesign #greendesign #bioplastic #bioplastics #biodegradable #sustainability #circulareconomy #upcycling #recyclingdesign #recycling #materialexperiments #materialdesigner #materiality #smartmaterials #circulardesign #materialnarratives #materiality #ecologicalart #ecodesign #cradletocradle #greenrevolution

Material evolution. Sewable and sturdy "textile" made out of yarn waste to extend the lifecycle of textile waste that can't be recycled properly and usually gets burned after its usage. I have seen so many great examples of people using mushrooms to literally grow new material out of waste. [Have a look: @jonasedvardstudio or @blast.studio i.e.] I was asking myself: if it was possible using old coffee cups, hemp or wood chips, it may also be possible to grow mushrooms on waste cotton yarn.  And it is. It's truly far away from being a "new material" to work within an industrial setting and to develop something like that, I would need a proper laboratory and much more time (and expertise) - but it could be possible on a long run. My second try using cut yarn to receive a more homogeneous material contaminated and failed. Maybe it was a mistake to change from an agar malt extract to a simple barley malt nutrient solution. Maybe I just worked not clean enough. Many possible maybes here. Summary of what I used: Liquid oyster mushroom mycelium bought here @myco_genetics cotton yarn leftovers from @_knoten.punkt_ an agar malt extract nutrient solution also bought here @myco_genetics steps (pretty short): "sterilize" the yarn (if professional: autoclave, if you are at home like me: steamer (thanks mom!)) and on the second step the nutrient solution. Transfer both as fast and clean as possible to your box, close the lid and store everything on a dark place. My growing process took 3 weeks at around 23°C. (Hint: wear a face mask and gloves during the process, clean all your materials with alcohol before you start.) I could add many many other helpful hints here .. but if you have any question regarding this project - feel free to ask! #ecodesign #biodesign #bioart #waste #recycling #mycelium #upclycing #mushroom  #reuse #sustainable #productdesign #mushroombased #myceliumdesign #myceliumtextile #biocomposite #biobased #renewable #myceliummagic #materialmatters #materialdriven #materialdesign #materialscience #materialfuture #tactiledesign #materialengineering
