Merry Christmas! Happy holidays from the Cartmill family. We had a very Halifax east coast Christmas night taking in the @evergreenfestns hot chocolates, s’mores, moosehead game, the grand parade tree & boardwalk with a mist in the air off the ocean. We laughed all night and it just lit me up. I absolutely love this time of the year, I think I would have Christmas all year. I’m tucking the twins in and truly grateful for the health of my kids and my husband, where we live and the life we lead. It is not lost on me this is very very far from where & how I grew up. The little me would be proud I never swayed from my vision for myself and what I wanted for my future children and how hard I worked as a very poor child growing up in Belleville. My daughter Berkley (if you don’t know) is exactly me and this little powerhouse of mine would have also gotten herself out of a basement apartment, generational alcoholism, trauma and poverty and into university with a full scholarship just like I did. I’m so lucky she doesn’t have to. She’s determined and strong and I’m so thankful. Easton is the sweetest kid on earth (for real!) and Asher is so smart and funny. I’m so proud of them. They are the best things I ever did or will do. Ken is a wonderful dad and partner 18 years in. I’m very lucky, anything is possible in this life. Nine…9 years on this earth with these absolute beautiful twins of mine! I can’t thank @actionlasertag enough for hosting Berkley & Easton’s joint 9th birthday with all of their amazing friends! They are complete opposites but both love this! I held Easton’s 8th birthday at @actionlasertag and everyone loved it so much we went back this year. Another perfectly orchestrated and planned out non-stop fun party everyone enjoyed! The kids were running, working in teams, and collaborating out there! We went through a flat of water, 2 flats of Gatorade and individual mini lemonades! The heat wasn’t stopping them! It was a blast and I highly recommend it! All 3 of my children were born in the 1st week of August 7 days apart. It’s an insane week truth be told. I haven’t been posting much lately and living in these moments with these 3 as much as possible before they grow up on me…which they are….and I’m really having a hard time letting go and giving more independence. I feel those sayings like “they are only young once, you’ll miss it when they get older. I feel those deep and I am truly having a hard time all of a sudden. Of course I knew they were going to grow up, but did I? Did I really think the truth through until this birthday…like they will move out, they pick their own clothes, they can make their own “play dates/hangouts”, they can care less about balloons, goodie bags and day trips, which they once loved. They can point out everything I do wrong also 🙄 No but seriously I was in some bliss mind state that I would have them always want and need me or be excited to do the weekend activities I had planned, booked, or not want to go places with me, the mall is like a form of punishment. I suggested blueberry picking and instead of the usual yay! I got a “do we have to?” and your girl isn’t handling it so well. Happy birthday to my 3 wonderful, loving, kind and funny babies that are not babies anymore, but will forever be that to me. Asher turned 14😳 and is taller than me by a lot (yes I know, that wasn’t hard I’m 5’2) and the twins turned 9. Thank you all for following along with me all these years. Can you spot Banksy? And just like that we have blinked and 9 weeks went by with Banks & Prim’s surprise puppy and he went home with his new family yesterday. It was heartbreaking to let him go, we all loved him very much. I took it harder than the dogs which is pretty funny when you think about it. We took the kids to a hotel for a night to get our minds off it and it did us all well to get out of the house and have a little fun. My Dad turned 70 yesterday on Christmas Day. If you asked me anytime the last 35 years if my dad would move from Ontario to Halifax to be with me I wouldn’t have believed you. Even more mind blowing is I invited him to stay in my house here with my hubs and 3 kids…we turned the basement into an apartment for him 5 years ago. We live downtown Halifax, beside Point Pleasant Park, and he loves it here just as I do. We’ve had a very unconventional relationship with my being an only child and his struggles with bone marrow cancer. My ambition to leave home at 15 for scholarships and sports didn’t bode well for a Father losing parts of his leg every other year. I struggled with my ambition and the guilt that comes with. I always took care of his care and needs throughout my life. Yet I still felt guilt. I feel like I got it right by driving all the way from Halifax to Belleville to get him when he needed me 5 years ago. He’s been living in our home ever since. My kids know love him, he’s involved in our family life, things I worried about most of my life. So cheers 🥂 to making the right decisions some of the time, instead of none of the time! Yay.
