In 2019 when I stumbled upon the opening of Steve House in Kashan, Iran, I was hoping to meet Steve McCurry himself, but heard he got denied entry into the country. Rumor or not, I finally had the chance to see his incredible exhibition here in Sydney. His work has had a profound impact on my travels. From Iraq to Afghanistan, India to Pakistan, and even exploring parts of Africa, his stunning visuals sparked an insatiable curiosity in me for these countries. There’s controversy surrounding his work, but beyond that, I see a deep humanitarian concern that resonates. Steve doesn't just snap pictures and move on; he immerses himself in the moment, connecting with people. His eagle-like eyes capture extraordinary moments in ordinary lives, evoking both joy and grief. I aspire to be one in a million like him, but during my own journey, the expressions of those being photographed appeared incredibly unnatural, and I couldn't make them relax. Steve must have a great personal charm, connecting with people of different nationalities and ethnicities, allowing them to let down their guard, resulting in such pure and captivating portrait photography. Not everyone has the courage to travel through war-torn lands.
