When the idea of #ValentinesDay strikes your mind, it’s always about how far you want to go to prove your “love”. That’s always been bizarre to me, and the people I’ve been with. @bankbazaar's #LoveOnABudget series vividly reminded me of a V-Day experience I had a couple of years ago with an equally introverted ex. We were both home bodies, who were embroiled in conversations that ranged from Ru Paul’s Drag Race to Politics. So, when we asked each other what the plan was for this man-made, overrated and extremely exhausting holiday, we both instantly said - let’s order in, and chill. 3 years ago, the concept of Netflix & Chill did not exist. So, we literally ordered in food, watched pirated movies and chilled - for the entire day, doing absolutely nothing. This must have easily saved us around 8,000 rupees - the whole shindig. Proving your love can always be tricky, but when you like spending time with a person, #LoveOnABudget is never an issue.

Of late, I’ve found myself heading out the door without anyone. I’ve plopped myself on couches at cute cafes and have dressed up to dine at a 5 star hotel - all by myself. At first, I found it weird. From the waiter asking me if I was waiting on someone, to the eyes that fixed their sight on me for awkward lengths - all of this at the cost of self love felt daunting. But then, all of that disappeared with time. The more time I spent with myself, the more I learnt about myself. Sometimes, we look at ourselves through the mirrors of everyone else’s vision. All the relationships in our lives are often the ones that willingly or unwillingly grid us, and put us under the microscope. Platonic, romantic, or blood - whatever the relationship is, we see or value ourselves as much as the other person does. Which I’ve understood is really unhealthy and toxic for obvious reasons. So for me, sitting somewhere, alone, isn’t a big thing. It’s liberating. It’s freeing. It’s almost cathartic because here, I’m me. I’m me when I read my favourite poems Gulzar saheb has written. I’m me when I’m presented with the donut I’ve ordered. I’m me when I’m with myself, which only makes me comfortable when I’m with anyone else because then, my existence isn’t dependant on what they think of me, or where they put me in their life. It’s so important to accept the fact that you can’t please everyone, and someone who’s the easiest to please is yourself. The entire week, I’ve been down. My mental health was in shambles, and to top this off, I was visited by a very agonising viral fever which only aggravated my irritable behaviour. I found my health take my entire body for a toss - I lost my appetite, didn’t have the energy to do simple tasks and was basically not my optimum best. My weekend kicked off with an early morning therapy session. My therapist today made me talk about things I’ve been shy about, at which I failed miserably. However, she said to me that it was an activity that needed a lot of effort from my side and couldn’t be mastered at one go. I recently came across @bankbazaar 's posts about everyday people sharing their wedding regrets, which really opened my eyes and I wanted to make sure my sister has none of those. With the wedding season and my sister’s “Taam-Jhaam” wali shaadi coming up real soon, things have been getting quite out of hand. She was in town recently to shop for her wedding, and we quickly realised one thing - weddings in general, are an extravagant affair but when it comes to Marwari weddings, it’s a whole other ball game. From our past experiences of attending glorious, sparkling, big fat Indian weddings, my sister and I sat down to discuss a thing or two about the things we wouldn’t want at the wedding. We realised we wouldn’t compromise on the photographers, because likes on Instagram are very necessary 😉. But, we found there are many small small things where money is often wasted, which we realized we could easily do without. We emphasized on one aspect - the fact that every body at the wedding has to have fun! With the money that is being saved by eliminating the unnecessary expenditure of return gifts, my sister actually decided to behave like a mature adult for once, and save the money for her future firm that she’s going to be starting soon.
