A broken system is one in which states spend more money to incarcerate people in state prisons than to educate children in schools. #FactFriday
Many states across the country, including those with high Latinx populations, don’t have fully representative data when comes to race and ethnicity. As a result, justice-involved Latinxs are often misrepresented in state criminal justice datasets. Collecting this data is important in identifying and understanding the impact of #MassIncarceration on the #Latinx community. ⠀ ⠀ #LatinxHeritageMonth #HispanicHeritageMonth #CJReform
Today’s the day! You may have heard that Vera’s moved offices for the first time in nearly 20 years. But you probably haven’t heard why. By moving to Brooklyn, we’ll reduce our office expenses by $15M over 15 years — and we'll channel those funds into mission-driven work. Our new Brooklyn offices will be the headquarters of local and national work to transform the systems people rely on for safety and justice. We want to make sure that our offices (and our work) reflect the diversity of the justice system that we aim to transform. "At a time when reforming the criminal justice system has become a national priority, we’re moving to a new, larger base where we can deploy our research, technical assistance, advocacy, and communications work. What began as an NYC bail reform project is now a national effort," said Vera President Nick Turner. In anticipation of the move, Vera formed a committee to introduce ourselves and support the surrounding community. The group has begun meeting and engaging with neighborhood representatives, local elected officials, and key cultural, civic, and social institutions. At 36K sq ft, our new office will add 8K square feet to our capacity, allowing for more room to expand our work and vision. Come say hi! 👋 #newdigs #bk #brooklyn #justice #cjreform #massincarceration #immigration
This installation by artist @jesse_krimes traces incarceration growth in Lancaster, PA and maps the trajectory and narrative of the broader national incarceration boom. We’re excited to be here for a day of immersive programming and an interactive corn maze symbolizing the maze of injustice that is the US criminal legal system. #voicesfromtheheartland
This is what a broken criminal justice system—one deeply rooted in racism and white supremacy—looks like.
Last month, Phoenix Mercury forward and WNBA All Star DeWanna Bonner joined the Vera Institute of Justice on a tour of the Estrella Jail—a women’s-only facility in Phoenix. She spoke with Vera in an interview about the experience. “Being a mother with twins, I can’t imagine being away from my babies. It’s tough being away from them even when I have to go play basketball. But being in jail? You can’t talk to them, you can’t FaceTime them—it’s really hard. I practically call my twins every five minutes when they aren’t with me. So just knowing that you can’t have in-person visitations—and hearing from the mothers about that experience—really stood out to me. I really can’t imagine babies being kept from their mom.” You can read more about Dewanna’s experiences in our bio. #NBAVoices #WNBA #DeWannaBonner #Womensincarceration #Mothers

September 15th marked the beginning of #HispanicHeritageMonth. It’s a time to remember the Latinx community’s achievements and contributions to our society, and also a time to reflect on the disparities that Black and brown people face daily in our #cjsystem. #Latinx people are more likely to be incarcerated than their white peers. Many states, including ones with high Latinx populations, lack fully-representative data when it comes to race and ethnicity. This data is important to identifying and understanding the effects of criminal justice policies on the Latinx community.
While major cities are headed towards much needed criminal justice reform, many of our nation's smaller cities and rural counties are incarcerating more people. Today begins the second weekend of Voices from the Heartland, a three-week arts and community event in an immersive installation created by artist @jesse_krimes. Held at Cherry Crest Adventure Farm, this event will highlight the national crisis of #massincarceration, with a specific focus on how it impacts small and rural communities. The immersive experience includes a customized 3-acre corn maze and an exhibition of collectively created quilts, and will feature Country music stars @PamTillis and @TerriClarkMusic, @oitnb author @PiperKerman, and Kristian Bush of SUGARLAND on consecutive weekends. Join Vera on the 21st and 28th for panels and programming! The event is free and open to the public. We hope to see you there! Click link in bio.
Although some large cities are reducing their use of jail and prison, the nation's smaller cities and rural counties are incarcerating more and more people. Join us on September 21st in rural Pennsylvania for Maze of Injustice, a one-of-a-kind arts and community engagement event, with a customized corn maze and communally created textiles, curated and co-created by artist @jesse_krimes, and powerful speakers who will explore how mass incarceration is entrenched in every American community. Join special guests @oitnb author @piperkerman, country music star @terriclarkmusic, Joshua Vaughn of The Appeal, Pennsylvania Pardons Secretary Brandon Flood, and local advocates during our daytime programming. Join @nbcnews’s network-wide conversations about the US criminal justice system - and what @lesterholtnbc calls an “American crisis.” Our research to #ReimaginePrison shows there is a better way - for people who are harmed as well as those that harm them - if they are rooted in human dignity. Check out how we're reimagining prison in our bio. #JusticeForAll
