|| 5 X W O R L D C H A M P I O N || Reflecting on 2019, becoming a black belt world champion is hands down my most significant jiujitsu accomplishment this year. After 4 very long years, I finally achieved this goal. It took me 4 years to get this one medal, 4 years! Medals don't mean much to me, but this medal has a story. I went through a lot of mental and emotional rollercoasters to get this medal. In late 2016, I made a very difficult decision to leave Art of Jiu Jitsu. Training and competing full-time is expensive so my wife and I lived in a place that was affordable but also wasn't the safest place. I couldn't stand the thought of her not feeling safe so we made the decision to move to a safer place which was more expensive and ultimately meant that we had to make budget cuts. It wasn't an easy decision to cut my AOJ tuition but I stand by it. I didn't realize the repercussions it would have on my social network though. People who I thought were my friends, people who I thought were my mentors, people who I thought supported me, they turned their back on me during this dark time. I'm not mad at them though. I am thankful for those people because they helped shape me into who I am now. My point is, never give up on your dreams no matter what you have to go through to get there. Even if it gets worse before it gets better, it will get better. . If you have been waiting for a sign, THIS is it! YOU are the master of your destiny. FOLLOW that dream. ACCOMPLISH that goal. WORK hard. SHOW up. MAKE a plan. EXECUTE it. Don't let anyone else be the captain of your ship. Don't let anyone else be the author of your story. Don't let anyone else dim your light. Excited for 2020 and the next decade 😁 . 🥇 2014 No Gi World Champion Adult, Ultraheavyweight, Brown Belt 🥇 2014 Master World Champion Master 1, Ultraheavyweight, Brown Belt 🥇 2015 Master World Champion Master 1, Ultraheavyweight, Brown Belt 🥇 2015 Master World Champion Master 1, Open Class, Brown Belt 🥇 2019 No Gi World Champion Master 1, Ultraheavyweight, Black Belt . 💘 @mermaidkeala ⛩️ @beyondjiujitsu 🥋 @shoyoroll @bearsyr @_tyrtl_ @itsajlg 🌱 @athorganics 🏋️ @peak_strength_conditioning
You only won because you're the strongest. You only won because you're the biggest. You only won because you're the heaviest guy in your division. You only won because you're fast for a big guy. You only won because you're the most conditioned guy in your division. You only won because you're really flexible for a big guy. You only won because you got lucky. You only won because you got a bye. You only won because your division only has [insert # here] guy(s) in your bracket. ... the list goes on. . Here are the real reasons I win: I win because I do the things most people don't want to do. I win because I don't give up at the notion of failure. I win because I train even when I don't want to. I win because I put in the work. I win because I have a great support system. I win because I do my best. I win because I want it. I win because I don't let naysayers write my story. I win. . @beyondjiujitsu @shoyoroll @athorganics @peak_strength_conditioning
Merry Xmas from a 🦍 #gorilla and his 🧜♀️ #mermaid 🤙🏽🎅🎄🎁
Tonight I had the great honor of cornering one of my students @scottyhao in his @bellatormma match. Scotty reminds me of myself when I first started out pursuing my dream of becoming a world champion in jiujitsu. He's another island boy chasing his dream. It's very rare for me to find other people with the same level of drive to achieve their goals. This guy is dedicated, respectful, disciplined, hard-working and coachable. Scotty is also a father, a husband, he works a full-time day job and on top of these important responsibilities, he also trained full time from 6pm until midnight 5-6 days a week getting ready for this fight. While today was the other fighter's day, tomorrow is another day and I know your day is coming, Scotty. Let's keep working 🔨 #onepercent @beyondjiujitsu @lexhao_
If you know @scottyhao, you know he doesn't have a #beastmode "on" button because he LIVES in #beastmode at all times. I'm excited to see how you perform tomorrow. Let's get it! @scottyhao @lexhao_ @nevaehhaobjj @bellatormma

Dropped in at @vgjjclub this morning to roll with these two guys @im_surgical_biatch_csw @goodguybri who just received their B L A C K B E L T promotions last night || Both these guys are great family men, business men, hard-working, and just all-around good people || They have both had long, arduous journeys (took both men over 10 years to get here) which serves as a great lesson for those who seek their black belt: "It's not who's good; it's who's left" - Chris Haueter, legend and one of the first American black belts || @beyondjiujitsu @shoyoroll
I want to take a moment to recognize one of my most consistent #nogitraining partners for my camp, Mr. @dharmayourway || This guy came out to Kona every other weekend for the past three months and also trained with me two times every other Saturday in Hilo taking time away from his family to train together || Thank you for showing up my friend || Let's make 2020 the year of O F F E N S E || You already know what to do || We're in a marathon, not a sprint || @beyondjiujitsu @cjjfnuera @exodus_maa
