On the weekend I had a chat about my injury with my dad • and to my great disappointment, when I told him I planned to surf again and rockclimb grade 19’s, he laughed • he ACTUALLY laughed, then proceeded to tell me that he thought id be lucky to climb a grade 16 • WTF?! 😡 It’s incredible that even the people who love you most can let you down so much • not that its his responsibility to make me feel hopeful • that in truth is up to me, up to us as individuals • to pick ourselves up after adversity and decide what WE are capable of regardless of what ANYONE tells us!!! So with great determination and vigor I say…NEVER let anyone tell you what you cannot do, NEVER let anyone decide your healing fate for you, NEVER let someone elses tainted opinion affect the outcome of your capabilities and NEVER listen to the negativity of others! 💪🏽 I didn’t get angry at my father, though I did tell him I didn’t appreciate it. 36 THINGS I’VE LEARNT ABOUT MY HIP INJURY SO FAR • For anyone who’s wondering, I have an Acetabular Tear, that’s the cartilage inside the hip socket, my tear runs from Anterior to Posterior, that’s front to back and I have a small 4mm cyst on the Anterior surface 😏 Hectic right? And I’m not the only one! More and more people are coming out with hip/pelvis/cartilage/tendon damage and a first response is often to get surgery 😬 If you have dodgy sensitive injured or recovering hips or just want to know what to look out for, I’ve made a list below of everything I’ve learnt about hips and this type of injury SO FAR! In the slide vid 1. Is where my injury is located & vid 2. Shows the muscles that this injury can and most likely affect. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• 1. I didn’t see it coming till it was too late. I’ll never assume I’m “all good” again. 2. Recovery for hips takes much longer than most injuries because of the intrinsic nature of the joint. 3. Everyone’s body & situation is different. Only compare your current day to your last. 4. Work with specialists that KNOW THE FEELING if you can. Eg. My Osteo has had his own Labral tear before 😉 thanks @thomas_allan 5. Hyper mobility can make this injury a little more complex to recover from. 6. When you start rehabbing...what ever you’re about to do, do it half as much and go slow. 7. Once the swelling begins to go down and the initial pain settles, the sooner you move the better. 8. Weekly Osteo ap. and muscle release work has been a life saver for me. 9. Get off crutches as soon as you can. To balance out the pelvic load. 10. You WILL have set backs on the road to recovery. THE ROAD TO RECOVERY IS PAVED WITH GIANT JUTTING ROCKS 😔 I thought about sharing a pretty picture of me looking serious • but, sometimes the message you’re trying to share, is emphasised ten fold with a simple raw image • this is what I’ll be looking at today and probably the next day and the one after that 🥴 My first real hiccup on the toad to recovering my Labral hip tear and the universe is telling me to slow down...again • I’ve been plodding along relatively unscathed, but as we started doing more mobility work and I kept pushing the envelope 🤦🏽♀️ I soon realised these 7 things👇🏽Feel free ti share your injury lessons below...I need all the insight I can get 🙏🏽 •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• 1. You might feel good one day, but the next you could take 10 steps back 2. Rushing is the worst thing for healing. That includes walking fast 😼 3. ALWAYS rest, PROPERLY rest after a treatment...I didn’t do this one well at all. That’s why I’m here 👆🏽 4. Don’t have expectations, they only make you push yourself too soon 5. It’s good to have a specialist to share your progress with, for understanding & support 6. Feeling like absolute shit, is all part of the process...and admitting it doesn’t make it suck any less 7. Breathing, deep belly breathing, is always good 8. DARE I SAY IT, BUT I THINK THIS CURRENT CRISIS HAS BEEN GOOD FOR US 😏 And the planet...it’s been a hard pill to swallow even for me, but the pandemic and fear vacuum that is currently sweeping the world, disrupting our work, our family life, our social existence and the way we live...may be a blessing in disguise 🥴 Yes, that’s me cringing • because I know not everyone will agree...but in this time of great discomfort and challenges. we have no choice but to ADAPT and GROW • that’s not to say this doesn’t all completely suck • it does...I was good at the start and now I’m feeling the financial pinch, the isolation, the sadness...but I’m also reflecting more, slowing down, getting projects done, properly connecting with family & friends, smiling at strangers at any opportunity, realising how lucky I am to live where I live and do what I do...the list of things I’m learning has become endless ••• The truth of the matter is: without adversity, we cannot truly evolve.
