UO student, Kiasia Baggenstos, is the inaugural winner of the Avel Louise Gordly Scholarship for Oregon Black Women!β¨π Avel Louise Gordly was the first African American woman elected to the Oregon state senate and her scholarship specifically aims to find students who share Avel's desire for activism through using your voice as power. Kiasia was selected for her outstanding commitment to positive change as well as her top academic performance. Kiasia is a rising sophomore in the @uosojc majoring in public relations and minoring in nonprofit administration and sociology.Β She is a member of the Media & Social Action ARC and a resident assistant in the Global Scholars Hall. She is also part of the Media in Ghana program, and will be studying abroad this summer in Ghana for six weeks. "This award solidified the reason why I tell my story and why I'm going to continue helping people who feel voiceless find their voice,β said Kiasia.ππ

We're wrapping up our 2023 Senior Spotlights with Sharon Sherpa! ππ Sharon is a business administration major with a concentration in marketing and minors in multimedia and Japanese. She is a first-generation Nepalese student from Portland, OR. For the past two years, she has been a social media and digital strategist at University Communications (UC) helping to develop and curate content for the @uoregon social media accounts, facilitate the UC Communications Academy, and much more. Sharon has also served on @netimpactuoβs executive board for the past three years and served as the vice president of operations this year. She is a PathwayOregon scholar and has served as a student leader for the Center for Multicultural Academic Excellence on the student leadership team for the New Student Fall Retreat for the past three years. Within the Lundquist College of Business, Sharon was a Flight School Mentor where she provides mentorship to first-year and transfer business students. She also served as the vice president of communications for the Dean's Council for Inter-Club Coordination. This year, Sharon was awarded the Dean's Award for Service by the Office of the Dean of Students which honors seniors who have made exceptional contributions to the university community, fellow students, and the larger community.Β βAs a first-generation student, I experienced a lot of imposter syndrome and doubted my abilities to be successful in college,β Sharon said. βI was faced with the fear of asking for help and seeming incapable. My involvement in many different organizations and on-campus jobs have surrounded me with groups of amazing mentors and peers who reassured me and helped me regain confidence in myself.β After graduation, Sharon will be recieving her Certificate in Global Business from the Lundquist College of Business and plans to move back to Portland to help socially responsible brands develop a strong brand presence through marketing. #DuckGrad23 #SeniorSpotlight
