Books can start conversations about race. Just as February shouldn’t be the only time to teach about Black History, this shouldn’t be the only time that we talk to our kids about racism. Diverse books featuring BIPOC should be on our classroom bookshelves and included in our read alouds throughout the year. “Explicit conversations with 5-7 year olds about interracial friendship can dramatically improve their racial attitudes in as little as a single week.” (NurtureShock: New Thinking About Children, Bronson & Merryman, 2009) Tap the link in my bio to find some examples from @simonkids of picture books you might consider sharing with your children. Because they’re not too young. • https://m.facebook.com/notes/simonkids/picture-books-that-will-help-you-start-a-conversation-about-race-with-your-kids/3094374163976013/

I’ve lost count of what school closure day we’re on, but I can tell you EXACTLY how many days we have left. I haven’t learned how to use more than 3 online teaching tools, I’m not staying up late replying to parent emails, and I’m not getting nearly the number of students joining my small group zoom lessons that I was hoping for. But when they all show up for our class meetings just to hang out, I’m 💃🏻 I’m trying my best to do what my students need me to do. I’m there for them. And I’ll be there for them for as long as they need me. But this teacher needs distance teaching to be over and be back in her classroom in September. #teachingfromhome #iteach #letterboardteacher #uniqueletterboard •

One more Live Read Aloud for the year! 🎩🍫🎫 With 30 chapters, and *only* 14 more days of school left, we started Charlie and the Chocolate Factory today. Not sure if we’ll finish in time, but 🤞🏻😁 Who’s school is still in session? 🖐🏻😬 How many more instructional days do you have left? #readersgonnaread #roalddahl #teachingfromhome

🐷🕷🕸 or 🎩🍫🎫 We still have until mid-June, plenty of time for another Live Read Aloud! I just can’t decide between these two books so I’m asking my students to help 📖🗳 Which would you choose? (Swipe to see my students’ choice!) #readersgonnaread #teachingfromhome #iteach •

#bitmojiteacher hack 🙌🏻😆 I record a Morning Message that I send to my students every day and I think it’s important that they see my face so I include the webcam in my recording. But on Thursday I was running late and was not “presentable” 🤪 so I just added my bitmoji to sub for me! 😂 If you’re still in school for a few more weeks like me 😬 and want to share a morning message with your students, here’s what I include: 1️⃣ overview of the day (this slide) 2️⃣ the answer to yesterday’s riddle 3️⃣ a new riddle 4️⃣ any very important info that I want to emphasize (using bright colors of course) 5️⃣ a short (<2 minutes) video of some uplifting news. I’ve shared one about a teen who taught karate to seniors and now does it on YouTube because of stay at home orders; a first grader who has a “joke stand” where he shares funny jokes to passers-by; a video tribute to #isrealkamakawiwoole on what would have been his 61st birthday; and astronauts playing with slime in space @iss 🔭🥋🤣🌈 • How many days do you still have left before summer starts? #teachingfromhome #teacherhumor #iteach #teachingkids •

📖 live • read • aloud 📖 I’ve finally gotten into a groove with my schedule, and the highlights of my day are undoubtedly my live meetings with my students ❤️ Anytime I can see their faces it puts a smile on mine. But the one time of day that feels real — relaxed even — is our live read aloud. I’ve recorded myself reading and the kids tell me they love it. But for anyone who has ever read aloud the heart wrenching parts of any good story (Stella, Sky, Charlotte, Leslie Burke...), you know how the reader makes a connection with their audience. I love looking up and seeing the expression on my students’ faces: disbelief, bewilderment, excitement, sadness. I want to captivate them because even the most reluctant reader will get drawn into a read aloud. I want to read TO them. I’m getting an average of six kids each day. I encourage them to curl up under a blanket and get comfortable. They mute their own mics because they want to hear every detail. AND THEY LISTEN. For thirty minutes they sit quietly and just • l i s t e n • What’s the most heart wrenching book you’ve read aloud? We just finished Because of Winn-Dixie. 💗 Our year isn’t over yet but this has me 😭 Parents were able to sign up for a time slot to pick up their things from our classroom yesterday and one mom sent me this 💖 #teachingfromhome #teacherlife #imissyoutoo •

“Best-laid plans” and all that 🤷🏻‍♀️ Who else is struggling with this #teachingfromhome thing?? My days start off great, but I’m usually exhausted from my virtual live team meetings, lessons and read alouds. Plus, I know that my pups need exercise, and my students don’t all turn in their assignments during the day, so giving feedback when it’s convenient for my schedule doesn’t always work out so well. I adhere to these “Work From Home Ground Rules” pretty vehemently for my own sanity 🤪 What about you? #teacherhumor #workfromhome #teachfromhome #stayathome #teacherlife •

⚠️ Parent Communication is essential, now more than ever. I can’t imagine using anything else since I rely on ClassTag for so much now that we’re not in school, like: 💻 Zoom meeting links and expectations; 📆 Reminders about live lessons; and 📋 updates on the week of remote learning. 🗄 I use ClassTag way more than traditional email because parents can find everything they need in one place. #onestopshopping Even before school closures, I’d: 📰 Send out regular messages about what’s happening with our class as an e-newsletter; 🗣 Send out important announcements; 👥 Schedule conferences; 📝 Create sign-ups for class parties; 📧 Send and receive private messages from individual and small groups of parents (great for chaperones so I wouldn’t have to share out my number); 📑 Translate a Spanish version of any text; 📸 Share photos of our day; AND 📈 See stats on who’s reading my correspondence and who I need to follow up with using a printed version. 💻📲 I use both the app and desktop version interchangeably. Parents can choose to receive my updates via the app or email, and decide whether they want their contact information kept private, and can even communicate with each other. 🙌🏻 Plus, it’s completely free for teachers and parents! Let me know what questions you have about ClassTag! 👇🏻 I absolutely love @classtagme 🤩 Check out https://classtag.com/l/97m937ss or tap the link in my bio 📲 • #ad #parentcommunication #uniqueteachertip #ClassTag • https://classtag.com/l/97m937ss
