Photo by George Steinmetz @geosteinmetz | Petra as illuminated by candlelight on a full moon. The ancient city was carved out of the narrow sandstone canyons of Jordan some 2,000 years ago. It flourished as major trading hub for camel caravans bearing frankincense from Oman to the Mediterranean. With the advent of Christianity, funerary customs changed and demand for frankincense collapsed, and Nabatean wealth along with it. To explore more of our world, follow @geosteinmetz.
Photo by @carltonward | A late summer sunrise colors a cypress dome and sawgrass prairie on a working ranch adjacent to Big Cypress National Preserve. In South Florida, nearly four million acres of contiguous public land are rooted in the wilderness areas of Everglades National Park and Big Cypress National Preserve. This is a western scale conservation landscape hidden in the east, where the endangered Florida panther has staged its recovery. But the fate of panthers and other wide ranging wildlife depends on private lands as much as public preserves. The 17-million-acre Florida Wildlife Corridor still provides a lifeline connecting the Everglades to its headwaters near Orlando and Georgia and Alabama beyond. But this corridor is only 60 percent protected and without more investment in conservation, Florida's impressive network of state and national parks and recreation lands will be broken apart by development, to the demise of wildlife and water on which we all depend. Thankfully there's still time to keep wild Florida connected and in doing so keep the Everglades from being cut off from the rest of America. Ranches like the one pictured, owned by Ron Bergeron, give me hope. @pathofthepanther #keepflwild @bigcypressnps @fl_wildcorridor
Photo by @michaelclarkphoto | Recently, I was able to fly above the Tetons in rough weather with the Grand Teton and Mt. Owen sticking out of the storm clouds below. The weather looked pretty bleak on the ground but we made the decision to go because we could sneak through a few holes in the dark storm clouds. We didn't know if we would see anything at all but we got incredibly lucky to see this phenomenal scene with the Grand poking through. My sincere thanks to Savannah Cummins for orchestrating this flight and our pilot, Lanny Johnson, a renown mountaineer in Jackson, Wyoming, for his expertise not only in flying in rough weather, but also lining up this shot. #grandteton #wyoming #grandtetonnationalpark
Photo by @CristinaMittermeier | There are many different kinds of sea ice and, in the Arctic, survival depends on being able to tell them apart. The beautiful patterns on this landscape, which I photographed with @SeaLegacy in the fabled Svalbard archipelago, are created by "fast annual ice," an ephemeral and highly unstable ice formation that will melt away by the end of the summer. Photo by @kiliiiyuyan | A polar bear waits near sea stacks on Russia’s Herald Island in August for the return of the sea ice. The retreat of the summer ice in the western Chukchi Sea has concentrated hundreds of polar bears on this island and nearby Wrangell, so personal space for these non-social bears is limited. Follow me, @kiliiiyuyan, for more from the Arctic and beyond. #russia #arctic #climatechange #polarbear
Photo by @ChrisBurkard | After over a year of planning, I sailed along the entire Lofoten Wall, a massive chain of steep granite islands situated in the Arctic Circle, Norway. I can’t sugar coat it... it was eight days of sideways rain, Katabatic wind and tumultuous seas. I barely slept and many could barely eat. But then again, there were moments like these… A reminder that life is all about balance.
Photo by @paoloverzone I Icebergs in Ilulissat Icefjord. The Greenland ice cap is the only remnant in the Northern Hemisphere of the continental ice sheets from the Quaternary Ice Age. The oldest ice is estimated to be 250,000 years old, and provides detailed information on past climatic changes and atmospheric conditions from 250,000 to around 11,550 years ago, according to UNESCO. Today Greenland's ice sheet is melting faster than ever (four times faster than it was in 2003) because of global warming.
