PUBLIC DISCLOSURE: MBR Acres is a beagle dog breeding facility in the UK which then passes on 5 month old puppies to laboratories for biomedical research. Dogs never go outside, never see the sun, live their whole life in cages, are experimented on and after testing, are killed by suffocation for post mortem/ autopsy evaluation. Note that it is not done by lethal injection as this would mess with chemicals of previous test. Through my vegan restaurant @mamaearthrestaurant I have met a lovely couple who introduced me to John, founder of Camp Beagle. @thecampbeagle John (@jcdanimal has been an activist against animal experimentation for decades and has set up the camp to educate and inform people as well as to make a stop to this to the use of animals for toxicity tests and prioritise non-animal methods. My afternoon at @brinsley_animal_rescue last week was blissful & just perfect. The hard working and lovely owners of @brinsley_animal_rescue introduced me to the animals living at the sanctuary and showed me how much work goes into saving wild life and taking care of permanent residents. It was so lovely connecting with Macy the cow with a congenital jaw defect, Mazey, Herbie the Giant bull, Oliver the pig and the rest of the cute gang. If you scroll through all the beautiful pics and reach the last picture you will see a strange contraption. That day, I learnt something new and wanted to share with you so you may also learn too. This contraption is used by dairy farmers and is called an anti-suckling device. These contraptions are pushed into the calves’ nostrils and are spiked, so if the calf tries to suckle, it causes discomfort in the mother who pushes her baby away. It is confusing and sad for both the mother and child. They do this so the milk is taken for human consumption instead of who it is supposed to go to.. the calves. It is important that we are aware where our food is coming from. Behind each meat and dairy purchase from the supermarket there is an undeniable suffering of a living being. I will say this very openly and without hesitation. A lot of people say they love animals, yet they still eat meat. My reply is - No you don’t. You just love your pets. You love your dog and your cat. But you don’t truly love animals. This is not coming from a place of judgment from my side but it is showing you more of an awareness of choice of words. It is okay to take your time and think deeply about your lifestyle and choices before you make a change and it is okay to make it gradually, by for example going pesciterian first, then vegetarian and then vegan. Everyone has their own unique journey.
