👩🏻⚕️WELCOME TO MED SCHOOL👨🏽⚕️Dr. Bensko & med students reported for duty today! We started our Metabolism/Human Body Unit & the students had to create claims for why our fictional patient was so exhausted for over a month! The students will learn how a healthy body functions vs the body of our patient over the next two weeks to determine her illness! • • A HUGE THANK YOU to Advocate BroMenn Hospital for donating the masks, gloves, & surgical caps! This was a great way to get the students excited about our new unit! • • All day the kids kept saying, “It’s like Grey’s Anatomy!!”🤣 & all I could think of was @scrubbinginpod 😍 #findmeamcdreamy
☕️THE SCIENCE CAFE!!☕️ This area in my room has been such a hit with my students! They beg to sit here during independent and group work time! Thankfully there hasn't been an issue and it is just first come, first serve, just like a typical cafe! I LOVE seeing my students fill these seats, but sometimes during my planning time I get caught doing my work up here too!😉 It is nice to mix up the seating in my room for the students, and they love these high tables and stools because they are so different from any other option they have! • • Use code MANIAC10 for 10% off of your purchase at http://www.nationalbusinessfurniture.com/?AFID=IG_NBF_Influencer. #ad #mynbfstyle #flexibleseating
🌟CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT IN MIDDLE SCHOOL🌟 If we are honest, for the first 3 years of my teaching career I didn’t have a true “classroom management plan.” Sure I have always used Call & Responses as attention getters, but I just didn’t have any tools in my tool bag for MIDDLE SCHOOL!! • • Last year I came up with the Jolly Rancher Wars as a survival strategy for myself😅I was having so much trouble with the shouting out, slow transitions, and the constant talking while I was! THIS. SAVED. ME. It isn’t anything fancy because I came up with it on a whim last year & it has just worked on my whiteboard, so why change it😂 • • THE BASICS: The classes compete vs each other every week Monday-Friday. Whatever class has the most points by the end of the day on Friday, the entire class gets a Jolly Rancher (1 per person). You would be shocked at how hard they work & how motivated they are to get ONE Jolly Rancher per week! They can earn & lose points as a class every day for things such as coming in quietly & getting started on their bell ringer, quick & quiet transitions, perfect call & responses, quiet & on task work time, etc. • • Do you have to use Jolly Ranchers? NO! Choose something your students love. I talked about this in more detail last year on my story. It’s saved in my highlights but let me know if you want an updated one!
🔬MYSTERY MICROSCOPES🔬To get my students excited about microscopes, this was the first lesson we did! Before the students were taught the various parts of the microscope, they looked at 20 items under the microscope and made 2 observations and an inference on what they thought it was! I struggled finding microscope slides that the students would know and have some background knowledge on! This is when I went to @wardsscience! #ad Ward’s has EVERYTHING a science teacher could need. They have numerous slide sets and I chose 3 for this lesson! They were perfect because they were common items such as a fruit fly, fingerprint, toothpaste, cloth, & more! I HIGHLY recommend checking out Ward’s Science for all of your science needs. 🎉Great news!! Ward’s has given me a discount code for all of you! Ward’s is giving you 15% off your total order plus FREE SHIPPING with the code: WARDSWORLD15MM 🎉Head over to my blog post for a more in-depth chat about this lesson! #wardsworld
LET’S GLOW!!!🎉 Today we ROCKED OUR SCHOOL. It quite literally was the BEST👏🏼 DAY👏🏼EVER👏🏼 The students reviewed the parts of a microscope through task cards & glow games. One student read the question. Each student answered individually. The student who read the question got to play the game. • • Today was indescribable. The engagement was through the roof. I have never had kids so thankful and appreciative all day. They were truly the sweetest. This was a day that none of us will ever forget. • • Today was all about taking a risk and stepping outside of your comfort zone. I truly did this with the glow games transformation and it was the best decision I have made all year!! • • What are you going to do this year to take a risk or step outside your comfort zone??
DETECTIVE BENSKO🔬The students got to meet one of my many “characters” today! The kids had fun trying to “break” my character by making me laugh😂 They dove deep into using microscopes by solving the mystery of who stole the school mascots! This was my #rockyourschool lesson last year & is always a total hit with the kids! The original lesson is from @gettingnerdy on TpT! Highly recommend! Now it’s time to get ready for ROCK YOUR SCHOOL!! Who’s joining in on the action?

This week we are continuing to learn all about microscopes!!🔬 Friday they started to learn the parts of a microscope through stations.(You know how much I love stations! The kids were basically just taking notes but stations make it seem more fun!) They colored the correct part of the microscope & identified the purpose. This week they will be doing a CSI Mascot Mystery Microscope lesson & a special review day for #rockyourschool before their assessment on Friday!! Let’s ROCK this week!👊🏼
🔬Let’s talk STEM!🔬 I am a huge supporter of STEM education in the classroom! I think STEM has so many benefits besides the obvious. It promotes collaboration, problem solving, and so much more! 👩🏽🔬THINK LIKE A SCIENTIST👩🏻🔬 I have had so many questions about this & what items I included!! It’s been a crazy start to the year so I thought I would just break it down here! The students had 3 mystery containers filled with items. They had to observe them & come up with hypotheses to determine what was in them WITHOUT OPENING THEM! (Shake them, roll them, weigh them) I then asked how we were going to test their hypotheses without ever opening them! Eventually the class discussion ended up with someone saying, “What if we had an empty container & could test our ideas?!” 😉Without them knowing, I had 8 beakers with items hidden under a tablecloth in the back of my room. (Brass fasteners, Fruit Loops, Cheerios, Beads, Marbles, Pennies, Skittles & Paper Clips) The students could then use their extra container to test their ideas about what was inside! This truly got them thinking like a scientist & was a great intro activity!! (Film canisters were from Amazon of course😉)
This is where I’m at with life right now✌🏼 How about you? #feetupfriday
What does a scientist look like?! Every year the students come to me with such misconceptions & stereotypes of what scientists look like. Just looking at this display you can see this. Almost half drew Albert Einstein. 8 out of 135 students drew girls and only one drew a scientist of color. This year I really wanted them to realize that THEY are the scientists when they walk into our classroom every day and that scientists can look like ANY HUMAN. This was such a great lesson to start off our year! This is in my store & I just added historians, authors, writers, mathematicians, & artists as well!
