Mojave yuccas have always had an easy compositional gravitation for me. This small series here is spread out between 3 separate @natgeo assignments from 2016 to present, hope you enjoy.

A black bear peering out between a pair of giant sequoias. This was a moment of dumb luck, with a some mild preparation. I learned a long time ago that when I’m out hiking, always have a lightweight telephoto lens around your neck in case a moment like this presents itself. Having said that, I break that rule more often than I’d like to admit and end up missing photos. This image here was taken with the @canonusa r5 w/ RF 100-500, a great lightweight run and gun setup for backcountry. Photographed for @natgeo 2021

Bees, pollinating the purple flowers of a Russian Sage bush in my yard.

American Kestrel, perched at sunset on a small branch. I photographed this bird here at sunset with a 300mm f/2.8 to melt out the background with 1 speed light to provide a little fill in the shadows. Luck always plays a role, and this bird seemed to have found preference in this particular branch so I set up, waited and crossed my fingers, only to be pleasantly surprised.
