I’m excited to share my latest story for @natgeotravel about how bison restoration efforts are connecting travelers with Native cultures. From @metiscrossing, which will open its new wildlife park in Alberta this December, to the @wolakotabuffalo project in South Dakota, Indigenous communities are developing ecotourism tied to the return of a keystone species that was hunted to near-extinction by European settlers in the 1800s. As Jason Baldes, Tribal buffalo program manager for the National Wildlife Federation, so eloquently puts it, “If we can decolonize our thinking, we can incorporate more holistic management styles and recognize the ecological and cultural importance of this animal to people and tribes. Still thinking about last week’s magical adventures at @uluwatusurfvillas, a clifftop property built in harmony with Bali’s stunning natural surroundings. 🦋 Our days began with juicy yoga classes framed by ocean and jungle views and ended with golden sunsets over world-class waves (I even caught a few baby ones 🤙) But what made this trip so special were the people, from the staff to the close-knit community of surfers, yogis, artists, and design lovers who gather here. I feel so grateful to have shared this gorgeous villa—consciously built with reclaimed teak and ironwood—with the most wonderful group of humans. Adventures in Masai Mara, Kenya, where days begin with hot air balloon safaris and end with bonfire sundowners ✨🎈 A highlight of this trip was exploring the Ol Choro Oiroua Conservancy in Northern Masai Mara, one of the first conservancies to be established in East Africa in the 1990s.
