“If life cancels marathons, go host your own marathon.” . Running for 2 hours is a crazy idea. But running for 5 minutes sounds pretty manageable. When that gets okay, try running for 10 minutes. Once you feel comfortable even with that, you just have to add the minutes and continue talking nice to yourself as the miles add on. (Jennie, you rock!) . We often focus too much on grand changes rather than giving credit to the small victories conquered in life. I wanted to recognize those victories this year. That’s how I convinced myself to try my first half-marathon. For that to happen, I knew I had to break down my training into bite sizes. First, it was short runs. Then it got longer and easier, but with lots of challenges. . We often think progress is made in a linear slope heading up. THAT’S NOT TRUE. It’s more like an hourly stock chart with numerous ups and downs. It’s a frantic mess. But when you zoom out and observe it in decades, it’s like the S&P 500; things do improve and you’re so much advanced than before. . My small victories to achieve this 2-hour-long run of 21.092km were to run 3 times a week. Those victories sum up to 243.91km, over 31 training days. Some runs were great, some were painful; my training process was a frantic mess. But I always ended the run with, ‘Cheers, to another small victory.’ . The half-marathon goal may have ignited these small victories. But I take so much more pride in the 31 training days than the actual half-marathon. Small victories are powerful. . And you know what? Anyone can win small victories. Therefore, anyone can create something extraordinary in their lives. (Like hosting a self-half-marathon!) I hope this post encourages anyone who needed this kind of talk. Anyone who’s discouraged by the frantic mess they’re going through right now. Don’t stop, just keep winning :)! . PS, Gotta mention the hero of the day, MY DAD! As soon as I said, “I’m hosting my own marathon”, he gladly volunteered to be my pacemaker on the bike. He was my water supply and photographer. He inspired me to WANT to be fit even in my 60s so I can support anyone’s small victories in life, just like him.

“넌 꿈이 뭐야?” . . 20대에는 만나게 되는 거의 모든 사람에게 뜬금포로 물어봤던 것 같다. “꿈이 뭐예요?” 30대에는 잘 안 물어보게 됐는데, “꿈” 하면 대개의 사람이 뭔가 원대한 답을 줘야 할 것 같은 압박(?)을 느끼는 것 같아서였다. 나도 어쩌면 그런 것들만 ‘꿈’이라고 생각했던 것 같다. . 하지만 거창한 목표들만 ‘꿈’이라고 말하기엔 대단한 도전들이 많다. 자연의 존귀함을 전하고 싶어 꽃을 파는 것도 대단한 꿈이고, 그냥 좋은 아빠가 되고 싶어하는 것도 대단한 꿈이다. 내 꿈 중 하나는 (극단적인 가정이긴 하지만) 하나님이 만약에 갑자기 아프리카로 선교하라고 하면 적어도 체력 때문에 못 가는 일은 없도록, 내 체력을 키우고 한계를 두지 않는 것이었다. . 2020년 1월. 스스로 올해 상반기 안에는 무조건 21.092km를 뛰는 하프 마라톤을 도전하자고 약속했다. 인생은 마라톤이라고 하는데 그 마라톤, 더 늙기 전에 반은 해보자는 단순한 마음이었다. 근데 달리기 훈련 시작과 함께 코로나19 때문에 마라톤대회들이 거듭 취소되거나 무기한 연장되었다. 열심히 해온 것을 선보일 무대가 사라진 것 같은 느낌이었다. 그래서 그 무대, 내가 만들자고 마음먹고 상반기 마지막 주말인6월 27일 토요일 아침. 내가 주최하고 내가 뛰는 나만의 하프마라톤을 열었다. 그리고 2시간 2분 만에 21.092km의 거리를 마침내 완주! 했! 다! . 하프마라톤 완주를 통해 얻은 것은 작년보다 가벼워진 몸, 더욱 건강한 다리와 지구력뿐만은 아니다. 작은 성취들의 힘을 믿게 됐다는 것이 가장 큰데, 그 이유는 완주보다는 그것을 달성하기 위해 이룬 3개월여간의 작은 성취들이 더 자랑스럽기 때문이다. 일주일에 3번 뛸 것. 달리고 난 후에는 무.조.건. 잘 뛰었다고 나를 칭찬할 것. (잘했어, 이진경이!) . 난 가진 것이 정말 많은 사람이라는 것도 다시 한 번 느끼게 됐는데, 우리 아빠의 역할이 크다. 딸이 셀프마라톤한다고 하니까 기꺼이 페이스메이커이자 물공급자(?)로 자전거 타며 지원해준 우리 아빠야말로 딸을 위해 시간과 진심을 flex하는 대단한 꿈쟁이란 것에 감사하다. 우리 아빠처럼 나도 환갑이 넘어도 내 자식들이나 어린 세대들이 꿈꾸는 것을 기꺼이 함께 응원해줄 수 있는 체력과 여유를 갖길 꿈꿔본다. (feat. 엄마가 문 앞에 붙여둔 플랜카드❤️) . 난 꿈이 많은 사람이고, 이 세상을 사는 많은 사람도 자기만의 꿈을 꾸며 이뤄갔으면 한다. 이 긴 포스팅을 올리는 이유도 나의 꿈 성취를 기록하기 위함도 있지만, 이걸 본 누군가도 자신의 꿈들을 하나씩 성취해 나가길 응원하기 위함도 있다. 그리고 꿈을 이루기 위해 이뤄온 작은 성취들에 대한 자부심도 가슴 찢어지게 느꼈으면 한다. . 오랜만에 또 누군가한테 물어보고 싶어진다. “넌 꿈이 뭐야?”

Growing up in Raleigh, North Carolina is undoubtingly the happiest days of my life that I still reminisce. There weren't many Asians in the community, but nevertheless was I ever so happy to be myself. I learned how we're all equal. How to accept someone as they are, not by anything else. Heck, I didn't even recognize myself as "Asian" because nobody labeled me as one. Maybe I was too young, but those good years built me to view the world as a beautiful array of colorful beings in all shapes and sizes. The adults and friends around me then raised me well. . . That's why it's even heartbreaking for me to see where America is at right now. It’s painful to watch what the nation, the hometown that taught me how to accept differences with respect is going through. It's horrendous to see where we stand. And America's not the only one dealing with this matter. . . Let's be real, Korean hagwons(institutes) hesitate hiring English teachers who are black or of a different race. Less of this happens now, but even a few years ago, I was offended by Koreans so obviously looking back and forth many times whenever someone in color was walking down the street. Many of the times I was angered at such episodes, but soon realized most of such discrimination and hate stemmed from ignorance. . . So I pray. I pray for not only the wounds but also for the ignorance. For being oblivious to privilege and selfishness. Also, as someone who dedicated a good amount of my life studying hiphop, practicing hiphop, I hope hiphop can again, create something beautiful out of this pain. . . 오늘은 특별한 달리기! Today's run was for someone special :) . . 에티오피아 아이들은 물을 얻기 위해 매일 6km를 평균적으로 걷는다고 한다. 이번 월드비전 달리기는 그 친구들을 대신해서 우리가 뛰고 깨끗한 물을 보내주는 특별한 달리기. 9살 꼬맹이 Tekalegn을 위해 해 떠있을 때 런 시작해서 해지는 걸 보며 12km 완주! 나도 물을 긷는다 생각하고 나만의 물통을 들고 달리며 #마이제리캔챌린지 에 동참했는데 작지만 ✨좋은 영향들을 더 자주, 여기저기 뿌려댈 수 있는(?) 어른으로 계속해서 성숙하고 싶다는 생각. 난 정말 가진게 많은 사람이니 또 많이 나의 것들을 나눠주고 싶다는 생각. 나의 신발 말고 남의 신발들도 많이 신어보며 세상을 봐야겠다는 생각. 암튼 무사히 달릴 수 있어서 감사, 누군가에게 도움을 나눌 수 있어서 감사, 한강이라는 좋은 달리기 환경에 감사, 에브리띵 감사! . . Children in Ethiopia have to walk 6km on average to get water every day. I participated in World Vision's #Global6kforWater today by running those kilos on behalf of this special child with my own water bottle. To be honest, I can't say my run is the same experience of what Tekalegn and his friends have to go through on a daily basis, but it was indeed a humbling experience to once again be thankful for what I have and STOP THINKING THE WORLD ONLY IN MY SHOES.
