A Bighorn piece I’m working on currently. It’s 14x11 on UART 400. It’s all about the distance mountains and the dark trees…and simplifying the lead in. Ore often than not, what seems like the easiest part of a painting hangs me up. But it’s nearly there. Another fall scene, this time from Grand Tetons. It’s 8x11 pastel on Fisher 400 paper. I used a violet monochromatic underpainting on this one. I can definitely see this composition working well as a larger piece. Here’s my most recent full length demo for my online community. It’s 10x7.5 on Lux, without an underpainting. We’re starting to dive into fall scenes, and I’ll be doing 5-6 fall demos over the next several weeks. This week was a local New England scene, and I’ll also be demo’ing the fall yellows of Wyoming and the west. I got a little studio space close to home and finally unpacked a lot of pastels that were sitting in boxes from my move in 2020. Here are my cool greens on the left and warm greens on the right. Warm and cool variation of each hue gets a tray. I’ll be organizing Mount Vision, Sennelier La Grande, and Townsend in other trays since they’re larger and get used selectively for larger pieces. I’m using old school cafeteria trays to hold them. It’s inexpensive, works great, and they’re mobile.

On a France kick. This is an aerial view from Dommes. It’s a small 6x8 on Fisher with a violet monochromatic underpainting. Infinite detail, so many squares and rectangles of fields to simplify. A little 6x8 on Fisher with monochromatic underpainting. After working on Pastelmat, it was nice to get back to texture on a sanded surface. I find Fisher and UART can do a lot of work for you if you use the texture to your advantage. Here’s another scene from my trip to France with a great crew of local French and British (and one American) artists. I tagged on this three day after my bigger workshop. I’m really happy I did. Such a feeling of community developed after only three days. I’m committed to learning French by the next time I visit in 2025. We’d break for lunch at about 12:30, and take at least an hour, maybe an hour and a half. Lunch included wine, coffee, produce from the participants’ gardens, and great conversation, with all of us sitting together at a large table. This scene was an aerial view from our second day, just outside Sainte Foy La Grande.
