There's something about the Thai islands 🏝... a fierce beauty and relaxed vibe unlike anywhere else! Mr B and I felt it again as soon as we moored on Koh Lipe (a new one for us!). We've come up with the theory that the first island you ever go to in Thailand will most likely leave a special impression forever, just because it was your gateway to this form of paradise! Do you think that's true? For me it was Koh Phangan. I will always see it as the quintessential Thai island experience, even though these days I prefer to spend more time on Koh Lanta. For Mr B, it's Koh Tao. What about yours?

You know you've been away from Instagram forever when the whole app's layout has changed and you can't work out how to make a post anymore! 🙄 So, 2021 in a nutshell so far: Mr B and I's first winter in Europe in years, a fantastic ski season in #Bansko, a failed attempt to learn snowboarding that led to a scary fall and a broken arm (the scarf on the photo is my fancy sling!), 2 weeks of Covid at the end of February (thankfully very mild!), zero travel outside of #Bulgaria to date, the approaching anniversary of my father's passing away last year that is making me emotional at times this month, good times with old friends, new friends, a tough business disappointment, my investment in an apartment to rent out here, an upgrade to a 2008 Audi that hopefully will take us on a few road trips, lots of board games played..! So we're travelling again! We jumped into our car on Sunday and hopped across the Bulgarian border to road trip in Turkey... A bit of a spontaneous decision as we wanted to scratch our travel itch and enjoy a few more weeks of sun before we spend the whole winter in Bansko. We didn't have too bad a summer of travel in the end, between exploring Bulgaria and visiting our families in France, Belgium, and The Netherlands. We got to see Paris and Amsterdam unusually quiet. I dreaded celebrating my birthday a bit this year - the 35th, and the first without my dad. He would no longer be here to regale us with anecdotes about the day of my birth, or where and how we've celebrated it over the years... or, like every year, wait til the exact time I was born to wish me a happy birthday! . It is on those occasions that the absence is very present. . But in the end, I was surrounded by people who turned this into a lovely day. My mother, my grandfather, good friends, my Mr B... And to think it was only last month we were in Thailand... So much has happened so fast. . Between March 8 and 11, we were on a liveaboard diving cruise - swimming with manta rays and other fascinating marine creatures, happily tired from spending most of our days in the water, out of internet signal and blissfully oblivious to the changes that were coming. At that time, we were still sheltered from reality. We had been living on Koh Lanta, in an island bubble where life had been carrying on as usual and the news seemed remote and not applicable to our isolated paradise. . When we got back to land on March 11, we found out the world was different. Everything had accelerated. We might not be able to get into Vietnam as we were supposed to the next day. We had to make very important and very tricky decisions with incomplete information, very fast. We had to make A LOT of those. Rules were changing by the day, sometimes by the hour. After just a few days of uncertainty and dilemmas, we found ourselves uncharacteristically down and stressed out, exhausted from decision fatigue and the emotional rollercoaster. From going through the stages of grief every time we made a difficult choice, which then had to be overturned. . Fast-forward and we are home in Bansko, Bulgaria - the home base we bought only last July! For us, things are much easier now. It feels like the calm after the storm...even though we know the storm is still raging outside. In-between, there has been a pointless trip to Bangkok, a return to Koh Lanta, a long journey to Bulgaria via Moscow, a 14-day quarantine in Sofia, and the constant worry of not knowing if we would be able to reach our home in Bansko, a town that had been placed in complete lockdown. . And to think it was only a month ago... When we arrived in Chiang Mai last month and I told Mr B we may not have time to do a lot of new things in one month and with the amount of work we had, he told me: "It's okay, I'm only here to do crossfit and eat at all our favourite restaurants!". 🤣 . So that's what we did (minus the crossfit for me!). To be fair, this was my 6th year spending time in Chiang Mai, and I really felt like I know this city inside out and was a bit stumped for cool new stuff to do. For the first time, I got a bit of a "been there, done that" attitude. 😅 . That didn't stop us having a great time (and we DID discover some new cafes, rooftop bars, coworking spaces and co), but I wonder if that means we should give it a break. To be honest, we were going to skip Chiang Mai this year, but... we failed! We ended up being pulled back here anyway... because it's a pretty awesome city, and, well, the restaurants!! 😋 . How did your year start? . My friend @tokyobecky asked me back in October if I already had an idea of my goals for 2020. To be honest, I hadn't thought about it at all at that point... but after a few minutes, I told her I didn't really want to set goals for the new year, but just to sit back and enjoy the things I'd built and achieved in 2019. Last year was a pretty intense year during which Mr B and I made some big changes. I got a new job and eventually ended up leading my team. We bought a home base in Bulgaria and got it furnished and fitted in a record one month. All of this while still travelling nearly full-time, including visiting 3 new countries, road tripping in a campervan, and many more crazy adventures. So yes, I realized that in 2020, I wanted to relax a bit and reap the rewards of the things we set in motion last year... . Well guys, I think I jinxed it! So far 2020 has started at full speed and hit me with more changes and more challenges. I don't think it's quite going to be the quiet year I envisioned... . What about you?
