OUT OF THE BLUE, VERSION 2: My newsletter, Out of the Blue, moves to Substack today! If you’ve been reading Out of the Blue over at Bulletin, think of this as a move across town, from one home I really loved to a new one that I’m just beginning to decorate. Here in my new Substack home, I’m envisioning bringing in a big old farmhouse dinner table into the dining room with enough seats for whoever wants to join. Think: clattering of dishes, bottles and bottles of your favorite beverage, side conversations, hearty laughter, a tear here and there, flattering candlelight, and more than enough to go around. All of my new plans for this community will be possible because of the new paid subscription option. Imagine! You! A patron of the arts! The option will include lots of fun bonuses and experimentation that remind me of the early days of starting this IG account 🐣 Join me if you love candlelight!!! mariandrew.substack.com Or link in bio 🤗 📸 @carolwildphotography
For the past year, I’ve been creating off social media: Writing (my newsletter), scribbling (early drafts of a book), dancing (jubilantly and ridiculously), and building (relationship, community, home). This is the first week I’ve actually been on Instagram in a long time (a sweet angel posts for me so I don’t have to have IG on my phone!) and while this complicated app doesn’t feel like the right home for my creative work anymore, I’m back now with a different relationship to it: As a kid, my bedroom was covered with photos and drawings and magazine clippings and moments (swipe to see!) and it was an ever-changing overspilling of my thoughts, values, and expression—a colorful landscape of whatever was going on in my baby head at the moment. That’s how I’m thinking about this space now: an overspilling of expression, without any particular intention. And DEFINITELY no “curation.” :) I might post art from time to time that doesn’t have anywhere else to go, I will keep you updated on my book-writing process, and I may share ideas or memories or experimental stuff that didn’t make it here years ago. I don’t have a plan yet, but if you’re cool with inconsistency and want to stick around through the evolution, I’d be delighted to have you! And if you’d like to keep up with my work, please join me at my primary creative space: mariandrew.bulletin.com. I send out an essay once a week and it’s been a really lovely transition from fast-paced polarized Instagram to the slow algorithm-less email. 🧘🏼♀️ Thank you for being here! I love you, even if I don’t know you!! Photo by @carolwildphotography
Pages from my book, MY INNER SKY, which turned one year old last week. I really loved writing this book, and I’m so grateful to everyone who read it 🥰
Join us at the Paintrock Canyon Ranch this summer for 5-nights of exploring the striking landscape of the Bighorn Mountains, writing, drawing, and generally finding a sense of place in your creativity. The workshop will be led by New York Times bestselling author, artist, and speaker Mari Andrew (@bymariandrew), exploring themes of belonging, displacement, otherness, and longing, and will aim to teach you tools to help tap into your creativity and connect more deeply with yourself and your surroundings. Spend each day hiking or riding horses through rolling meadows and canyons, journaling under ancient petroglyphs and pictographs, swimming in the cool waters of the Paintrock creek, and enjoying creatively prepared meals featuring local ingredients, made by a private chef. At the end of each day, retire to a large, private safari style tent —stylishly furnished with full-sized beds, bedside tables, dressers and chairs. These sturdy, elegant tents are nestled beside the Paintrock Creek at the entrance to the spectacular Paintrock Canyon, designed to put you as close to nature as possible. Leave the workshop with a better sense of your own creativity and be empowered to take this forward in your own life and work. All levels of creatives and riders are welcome. July! Hi!!! 🌬️
“How do I share my work?” Is the question I get asked the most (besides “Where’s the nearest subway station?” in my very touristy neighborhood). Whether you mean “How do I get brave enough to share my work” or “What practical steps should I take to share my work” or “How do I even know which work to share,” I’m going to cover it ALL during an online workshop: ✨This Saturday, June 24th at 11am ET!✨ Ask any question you have about publishing, posting, and putting yourself out there!! I will be 100% honest about it all :) Comment the word ‘create’ on this post and I’ll send you the info, or the link’s in my bio too if you’re feeling old school. I’m so honored to do anything I can to help you share your beautiful, strange, phenomenal, magical, experimental, silly, and/or delicious creative work! 🪄
I nourish my alive-ness by fully using my senses. 🍋 My goal here on earth is to “touch, taste, smell my way to the holy and hidden heart of life,” as my man Frederick Buechner says, and travel is a Master Class on that jounrney. I’ve now created 3 pieces of art for the @princessbermuda hotel, all documenting what I’ve touched, tasted, and smelled on the jewel box island of Bermuda. Alive-ness is fed with new colors, new scents, deepened feelings, and meaningful interactions. During my third trip to Bermuda, I’m getting a King Size Big Gulp Extra Large serving of Life-Food and I feel my creativity, gratitude, and wonder expand like crazy. Thank you Bermuda, thank you @princessbermuda, thank you water, thank you sea turtles, thank you beach, and thank you nose/eyes/ears/hands for the giant dose of vitality! PS If you visit the Hamilton Princess Hotel, look around for my artwork! (When you’re done admiring the Matisse, Picasso, Murakami, Ai Weiwei, etc etc 😋)
