Meet Assoc Prof Chen Zhi Xiong, Master of @nuslighthouse – one of NUS’ newest hostels. He coined the hostel’s name during an “Aha!” moment while driving down Prince George’s Park Road one night. At LightHouse, Assoc Prof Chen, who is Assistant Dean (Education) at @NUSMedicine, hopes to create a familial atmosphere by organising activities in an organic, spontaneous and informal manner through its Communities of Practice. Its “Iced Milo, Kopi, Teh?” sessions bring together staff and students to co-organise and enjoy activities ranging from movies-under-the-stars to fireside chats and open-air jam sessions. House residents can also find Assoc Prof Chen stopping for a chat during his evening walks. “At LightHouse, you ‘Live your Light’. Shining a spotlight on social issues through film – that was the inspiration behind NUS CNM Society's (@nus.cnm) PitchIt! 2023 competition. 19 teams of aspiring scriptwriters, filmmakers and actors came together to advocate for social issues close to their hearts. They learned from social service organisations such as New Hope Community Services (@nhcs.sg) and Club HEAL (@clubheal.sg) as well as film industry veterans such as award-winning film director Ray Pang (@ray_pang) on producing compelling films that spotlight issues of homelessness, gender inequality, food sustainability, mental wellbeing and education in Singapore. Participants also heard from passionate media professionals from @ourgrandfatherstory, Google.org and @OurBetterWorld on crafting stories through film.
