Hiroshige was the last major master of the ukiyo-e (“pictures of the floating world”) school, Hiroshige lived his entire life in the city of Edo (now Tokyo). In 1831, influenced by Hokusai, whose Thirty-Six Views of Mt. Fuji in 1823 introduced the commercial landscape print to a mass audience, Hiroshige began the first of his series of lyrical, dramatic landscape prints that incorporated pictures of famous places (meisho). These evoked the seasonal moods associated, by literary and artistic tradition, with different places during the Edo period (1600 to 1868). 📘 more: 📲 Download the app for free: 🔗 LINK IN BIO 🏛 @cincyartmuseum No. 57, Grounds of Kameido Tenjin Shrine Hiroshige 1856 #cincinnatiartmuseum #hiroshige #japaneseart #arthistory
Caspar David Friedrich (born #OTD in 1774) is the most important representative of early German Romanticism. Born in a small town next to the Baltic Sea, he was very familiar with the rough nature of northern Germany and the nearby island of Rügen with its famous cliffs. 🎨 was painted in the year of his marriage to Caroline Bommer, shortly after the honeymoon, which was undertaken together with his brother. This circumstance suggests a possible identification of the three figures on the painting. 📗 https://www.kmw.ch/en/ 🏛 @kunst_museum_winterthur Chalk Cliffs on Rügen Caspar David Friedrich 1818 #kunstmuseumwinterthur #caspardavidfriedrich #romanticism #landscapepainting #arthistory
In April 1867, Monet and Renoir had asked the board of the Louvre for permission to put up their easels in the columned passage of the Perrault Wing. Looking out from this elevated position, Monet painted three views of the city. The view towards the Gothic Church of St. Germain l’Auxerrois and the surrounding residential area depicts the solidity of the architecture, with Monet handling its intricate bulk with skill and artistry. 📘 more: 📲 Download the app for free: 🔗 LINK IN BIO 🏛 Alte Nationalgalerie, @staatlichemuseenzuberlin St. Germain l'Auxerrois Claude Monet 1867 #staatlichemuseenzuberlin #altenationalgalerie #claudemonet #impressionism #arthistory

The artist we present today, Lucas Cranach the Elder, was a close friend of Martin Luther, and the godfather to his children. He made illustrations of Luther's Bible translations. But Cranach's studio also produced dozens of depictions of Salome and the biblical heroine, Judith, who owed their popularity to their thrilling sensuality. They are icy, sadistic, and triumphant, in the extreme attire of classy ladies of the time, and what is more they are endowed with the facial features of the illustrious beauties of the local court of electors of Saxony in Wittenberg. 📘 more: 📲 Download the app for free: 🔗 LINK IN BIO 🏛 @szepmuveszeti Salome with the Head of Saint John the Baptist Lucas Cranach the Elder 1530s #szépművészetimúzeum #lucascranachtheelder #salome #renaissance #arthistory
🌷🌸🌿🌳🌼 André Bauchant (1873–1958) French self-taught painter. He was a market gardener until 1914 and did not begin painting until 1919, when he was demobilized after war service (in the army he had shown a talent for drawing and had been trained as a map-maker). In 1921 his work was shown at the *Salon d'Automne, and he soon became one of the best-known painters of his type. 🏛 private collection August André Bauchant, Bouquet of flowers 1949 #andrebauchant #selftaught #flowerstagram #landscapepainting #arthistory
Kōshirō Onchi was a Japanese photographer, print-maker, and the father of the sōsaku-hanga movement in 20th century Japan. This movement was opposed to the parallel shin-hanga ("new prints") movement that maintained the traditional ukiyo-e collaborative system where the artist, carver, printer, and publisher engaged in division of labor. Here it stressed the artist as the sole creator motivated by a desire for self-expression, and advocated principles of art that is "self-drawn," "self-carved," and "self-printed." 📘 more: 📲 Download the app for free: LINK IN BIO 🏛 @rijksmuseum Diving, Kōshirō Onchi 1932 #rijksmuseum #koshiroonchi #japaneseart #modernart #arthistory
