Instagram Influencer Spotlight On: Joel Moore (Mulga) @mulgatheartist

1) Tell us a little about yourself. What are you doing now and where do you come from?

I am an artist based in Sydney. I’ve been a full time artist for about 3 years and before being and art dude I worked in a finance office job. The story goes that at school I liked to do art and towards the end of school I thought about my career options. I decided that studying finance and economics was a “smarter” and more lucrative choice, so I did that for about 10 years and then I got to a point where I was stagnating in my career. I realised that I didn’t have a “passion” for doing an office job my whole life. I decided to give the art a wholehearted attempt as I had been drawing the whole time and really loving it. I set up a blog and started posting my drawing up and then got noticed and had an artshow and then started making products and selling at markets on the weekends and taking on all kinds of different projects like murals and designing t-shirts for other companies. Now I’m at a good place and have been fortunate to work with companies such as Microsoft, Samsung, Coca Cola, Red Bull, Paypal and Toyota.

2) What are your topics of interest? What do you post on Instagram the most?

I am an artist so I post everything and anything related to my art. The paintings I’m working on, the collaborations I’ve been doing or new products I am releasing. I love to paint summer themed characters and bearded dudes and gorillas and artworks that make people smile. I also love to write a weird story or poem about the characters I create.

3) How did your Instagram name come about?

My nickname at school was Mulga after I recited a poem called Mulga Bill’s Bicycle by Banjo Patterson. For my art I went by the name Mulga and used mulgatheartist for my online presence from my website to all the social channels so I could have the one handle as Mulga on it’s owm is a bit too popular.

4) What are some apps you use to edit your photos? Share with us your photo-editing routine!

I’ve recently got a new Samsung phone and it takes really nice photos so I use that and then on Instagram, I usually increase the brightness and structure a bit and then like to add some warmth to to get the summer vibes going. That’s about it.

5) Any Instagrammers whom you really like? Which Instagrammer inspires you the most?

I love art so following my art buddies to see what they get up to is always good. Hugeskull is always making sweet 80s inspired artworks.

6) If there’s one thing your fellow Instagrammers just gotta try now, what’s it gonna be?

I feel like the stories are the ‘thing’ at the moment, I’m still trying to get my head around it though.

7) What’s your favorite part about being an influencer?

Being able to work with cool companies and making cool art and then getting more eyeballs on my art is sweet.

8) What are some of your top tips to brands for running campaigns? How do you maintain authenticity?

Let me do my thing without to many restrictions and then we’ll have a great time. Trying to not stray to far from your ‘thing’ is good to keep in mind when trying to stay authentic.

9) What would your advice be on the importance of quality and original content?

I’d say it’s super important to keep it fresh and top notch. Good photos, consistency and being interesting is super important. Being unique and being the only person who does things in the way you do them helps to set your ‘brand’ apart. I try to think from the perspective of someone who follows me because they like the art I do, would they be interested in this photo I’m about to post? I’ve always tried to do a post a day but I think that can get hard when you are trying to maintain quality. I’m starting to notice now that your instagram photos can be your portfolio and the stories are to let everyone know whats happening. So that could mean less posts until you have quality photo to share and more stories. I’m still pondering it as I like the idea of bombarding people with my posts (as long as they are good).

10) What do you like best about partnering with brands?

Getting my art in front of a new audience. Doing projects that you would never normally do is pretty sweet as well and just doing bigger wilder things is always a buzz.
